If I could teleport, my chief fear would be accidentally teleporting into a solid object. Not too unreasonable to imagine Kurt thinking so too.
Cyclops' greatest fear is his eyebeams emitting cosmic energy in it's full fury and unchecked - hurting people close to him. Here Scott is one of most strong-willed, resolute leaders there could be, but still having a great fear that plagues him still.

Yeah, I think it made for good storytelling possibilities. I'm just a geek. :)
Like I said, I kind of like the idea that it would actually be physically impossible for Nightcrawler to 'port into a solid object, but that he just doesn't know that it's impossible. Just because you can do something, after all, doesn't mean you know HOW you are doing it. For thousands of years people didn't know how the science of reproduction works, but that didn't stop them from making babies!

Wait a minute. Nightcrawler teleported into an unknown location in his very first mission as an X-Man, when he bamfed into Valhalla Base. If I recall correctly, that was described as a maze of tunnels.
When did they decide he can't do what he was doing in the 70s?

If I remember, he believed it was a very risky attempt, but justified it because the stakes were too high.

Nightcrawler is just one of the coolest characters ever. That's all I care about!

Interestingly, Marvel seems to have backtracked on Nightcrawler's infamous "becoming invisible in shadow" power. The Marvel Universe website says:
QUOTE:
He can also render himself nigh-invisible in shadows by manipulating the ever-present portal to the dimension he teleports through so as to bend light around himself. |
|
|
So now it's NIGH-invisible. Because that makes so much more sense.

"If I remember, he believed it was a very risky attempt, but justified it because the stakes were too high."----- This rings a bell, but I don't think it was this scene. Here's the scene as it appeared:

That must have been before they came up with the idea that he needed to see where he was going.
Wasn't the original idea that he was somehow traveling through shadow, hence the name "Nightcrawler?" Otherwise he was named after one of those fat earthworms.

The way in which Nightcrawler's invisibility "read" when I was younger was that his dark indigo skin reflected very little light and it was therefore difficult to see him when he moved about in the dark. I never read it as a power, but rather a characteristic of his appearance. This, of course, ignores the fact that what he's wearing is a vivid red, with huge pauldrons that flare out to HERE... That... That unfortunately is not going to blend into the shadows anywhere he goes... But as a kid, I didn't factor that in. He was simply one of the best looking characters I'd ever seen with a super-cool super-power.

I just LOVE that the BAMF! is heard at the point of departure but NOT at the destination. This kind of detail is missing nowadays, as the current/recent creative people rarely remember them. I think it was established very early on that Kurt needs to know where he is going and that he had to guess in order to make a "jump" as the one portrayed above. When at home, I will find the reference.

Hey, this is a bit off-topic, but is there some online source where people are getting all these comic book clippings? Or are they just scanning and downloading them themselves?
