I've always wondered if Doom's personal armor has
different models. Are some more powerful than others, for
instance? In certain comics Doom's armor appears to be a
match for Iron Man's (at least the Golden Avengers
version) but in other instances this isn't the case.

Do you guys think that Doom's armor should be the most
advanced and most powerful? Given his ego, I think that it
would make sense that he wouldn't want anyone, not even
Tony Stark, to one-up him in a field he's obviously highly
proficient in.

Nope.

Doom's armor never seemed to be filled with gizmos, like IM. I
understand it augments his strength and fires some finger-bolts, but I
wouldn't put it much above, in terms of power, Green Goblin's suit.

Doom's tricks usually lay elsewhere, his schemes, his time machine,
his cosmic power robbing device, et al.

Doom's armor could even be a pimped-up antique, IMO.

He wears it more for psychological effect than anything else, it seems
to me.

Walt Simonson did present an updated Doom armor that made
possible the ultimate time-travel fight. That was awesome!

Doctor Doom doesn't have different models of his armor, or different "marks" (although of course he would upgrade technology as needed).

In terms of power, Doom needs to be able to hold off the Fantastic Four so I would easily classify it as about the same power of Iron Man or even greater (depending on how you view it).

However, unlike Iron Man's armor, Doom's armor is not specifically geared towards combat.  Doom more or less lives in it after all!  It's probably a bit more versatile, more comfortable, and not optimized for fighting.  As Flavio says, most of Doom's attacks on the FF involve other gimmicks, plots, etc.

I don't think it is as versatile a weapon as Iron Man's, but it DOES have considerable combat capacities. Including a force field (something usually beyond Tony Stark engineering capacities...) and other surprises.

It has been shown, however, that it doesn't have the same long range flight capacities of Iron Man's. Probably also not the same degree of strength enhancement. Neither of which are priorities for Doom, who isn't fond of hand to hand combat and prefers more regal ways to travel long distance. But I doubt its offensive and defensive capacities are second to anyone!

Doom forged the armour in a Tibetan monastery didn't he? In other words, he had about as much access to modern equipment when he built it as Tony Stark did when he built his armour in a Vietnamese prison.

I like to think that Doom's ego keeps him from updating his armour too much as he doesn't like to admit that his first attempt isn't always perfect.

That said, he's probably made a few of the proverbial special modifications over the years, without overhauling the whole thing.

It'd be interesting to see what Iron Man would do if placed in the situation Doom was in after his battle with Tyros.

For the record, I love the "vintage" Doom outfit that Kristoff sported for a while.

I just love the fact he carries a pistol.  I like to imagine he disdains some foes too much to bother with anything more than necessary.

Doom isn't the type to sully himself by fighting hand to hand. That's beneath him, but I have no doubt that his armor is nearly as sophisticated as Iron Man's in many ways. It just depends on who's writing the story, and what they need the armor to do.
