Wilson,

Those would be "sales" in terms of orders I believe.  Not customer purchases so I don't think weather would impact those numbers.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Joe touches on something important here: when we see "sales" listed, they rarely mean "sell thru". They reflect how many issues the Shops have ordered, and cannot return, and which therefore count as "sales" to the publishers (since that is what they are!).

Image and Marvel both got a lot of mileage out of this, during the speculator boom, publishing "sales reports" that showed huge numbers, but did not in any way indicate how many of those issues would be subsequently resigned to languish on the shelves or in the back issue bins, unsold.

Totally psyched about AFTERMATH!

No matter how long this run of NEXT MEN is, it means at least another year (right?) of original Byrne goodness!

To me, this is even better news than if JB returned to working for the Big Two. I much prefer his original stories on his own characters to his work on established characters. As we have seen, you can never tell what will happen with his own characters, as opposed to the characters being returned the way he found them at Marvel or DC.

••

At this point, the nature of AFTERMATH renders it open ended. There is a goal that the protagonists are chasing, but how long it will take them to get there is anybody's guess.

AFTERMATH will, in fact, be much more of a traditional adventure book than was NEXT MEN. No beginning, middle and end all plotted out before I start, this time. More like Stan and Jack launching the first issue of FANTASTIC FOUR. It lasts as long as it lasts!

Bitter-sweet news, JB:

Excited to see AFTERMATH, especially with this glimpse of it's intent, but we'll see it only after NEXT MEN has ended.

It bothers me that I visit certain comicbook stores and routinely see
enormous stacks of the latest event book or "Wolverine & Friends" title and
there is only a single copy of something like BEASTS OF BURDEN, G-MAN,
JBNM, JURASSIC PARK or USAGI YOJIMBO to be found. I'm usually the guy
picking up that lone issue, and there isn't another one in the back of the
store to replace it. Often, when I visit again a week or two or three later,
many of the event books are still there.

In the end, the good thing to come out of this is that I feel having the title NEXT MEN on the books will sell more copies.  It's a rare independent title that has such strong brand name recognition.  The original series is a strong experience for people my age, and younger readers can hook into it now and get the trades to see the original run.  It seems titles that run on this new issue/trade cycle have a way of gaining momentum.  In the long run, it's a good banner to put anything from this universe under.

And it's a kick ass logo!

Well...Stan and Jack did do 100 issues of FF. Here's hoping for at least 101 issues of Aftermath.

A case in point--I still encounter copies of X-Force #1--still sealed in their bags, with their trading cards--in 25-cent bins.

 QUOTE:
It spins right out of the "last" issue of NEXT MEN, and features
several familiar characters.

It also takes a very, very, very different direction!!!

Well, considering the current issues have taken such a different
direction, it should be no surprise that we should be surprised by a
different direction. That's what makes it fun.

Wow, now this is exciting news. Sounds kind of fun for you to be able
to play around in the universe you've created, now that you've had a
chance to finish the initial tale you started.
