What are the best issues/runs of Daredevil? I'm familar with the Frank Miller run and the first two or three Marvel Masterworks, of course, but that's about it. I've only read scattered issues otherwise. As far as I know, there's only one John Byrne pencilled issue, plus a handful of covers. Is this correct? My personal favorite issue so far (sorry Frank - I love your stuff, too) is #7, the Wally Wood illustrated battle with Namor. It is one of my favorite comics ever produced by Marvel, or anyone else for that matter.

I loved Miller's DD as a kid, but nowadays I wanna chew him out for starting the grim 'n gritty mess that we're still stuck in. My favorite DD comics are: (1) the first year or so of the series, (2) the period when he was partnered with the Black Widow, and (3) the Nocenti/Romita Jr. run, in which Mephisto became his arch enemy.

The only period when I followed Daredevil on a regular basis was #90-109, liked it then but lost interest around that period's end.

My first issue of Daredevil was #172 in the middle of Frank Miller's incredible run. What came after Miller left in #191 was noticeably inferior so I dropped the book about 10 issues later. I have sporadically read previous issues but they didn't seem to catch my attention. I have heard great things about the Wood issues (didn't he only ink?) and I would love an opportunity to read them.

Wood penciled a few issues, starting with #6. The Namor issue is the only one that really sticks with me from that run though.

There's this common opinion that Daredevil starts with Frank Miller.
How unfair! I love his run (Born again included), it's my favorite, but there are several good DD stories from the past. And, thanks to Essentials, I had the chance to read them in these years. I'd say the series first 100 issues are good. A good "soap opera with super powers", where the romance seems often more important than the action. Daredevil was hugely popular among Italian girls in the '70s, 'cause of this!
And what can I say about the artwork? I'm not particularly fond of the early 10 issues or so (except for the first), but when John Romita jumps aboard the quality improved hugely. And the Colan/Palmer issues are pure magic.
Another run I'd like to mention is the one by Kesel/Nord. For years every author after Miller had tried to imitate his work. Coming back to the characters roots was realy daring and brave for a writer, in that moment! Joe Kelly did good stuff, too (with the Dean!).
After Guardian Devil I haven't followed the character anymore, if not sporadically. Picked some issues from the Brubaker run and there was the usual, annoying, depressing atmosphere. "Look, people, I'm as good as Frank Miller!"
Sigh.
Oh, and a special mention to my first exposure to the character, the MTU issue by Mantlo and Buscema featuring Electro and the Blizzard! I thought Daredevil was so cool then!

Wood pencilled and inked issues #5-8. Then he did finished art on issues #9-11 over Bob Powell layouts. He also scripted issue #10 himself. From what I've heard, the reason he left after that is he didn't like working Marvel style, where he was expected to contribute to the writing but only got paid as an artist. I presume that's why they had him try his hand at scripting issue #10, but Stan must not have liked the results enough to make him permanent scripter.

I've placed an order that will give me the DD run from 1976 through1978. Hopefully there's some fun stuff in there.

I found the Ann Nocenti/JRJR run to be quite good.
