Yes, flaming spit. The Baxter Building had been overrun by the latest edition of the Frightful Four, this time with alternate-universe Reed Richards/Brute as member number four. Johhny was wrapped up in some asbestos blankets, but was able to spit on Reed, burning through his ropes and allowing him to escape. I'll have to try to find a scan.

That was my first issue of Fantastic Four. To be fair, he shoots flame from his mouth, I'm not sure it's technically spit.

He also did this trick in Mavel Team Up #1, when he and Spider-Man are trapped by Sandman: they are tied back-to-back suspended in a water tower, and Spider-Man leans forward (putting his own head underwater) long enough for Torch's face to dry off enough for him to launch flaming spit at the rope suspending them. "And soon, since the knotted rope was attached to a friendly drain..." was the caption written describing their escape from the tower. Not one of Roy Thomas' best scripts, I admit. If only my flypaper mind could be harnessed for good, instead of evil!

Dan, you're probably correct. Since he can direct gouts of fire from his hands, he may well be able to eject fire from any part of his body that he chooses. Looked like he was spitting, though.

Are there any other super-heroes that squirt their own bodily fluids at their enemies? Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex offers a host of possibilities...

If we apply Occam's Razor to this question -- the simplest solution is most often the correct one -- which choice provides the simplest solution. That is, when confronted with the concepts of mechanical vs biological webshooters (and webbing) which is the easiest to explain?

Man! I've never read that Marvel Team-Up, and now I want to! What happens next? What's in that building? Why would Sandman want them to escape?
I'm excited by the story and it's only two pages!

Thank you for posting those scans, Matt. Nicely (and quickly!) done, sir.

I've never read that Marvel Team-Up…•• Depending on who "your" Sandman is, that could be a good thing! This was the story that began his transformation from a ruthless killer (on the FBIs 10 Most Wanted list) into a big ol' misunderstood huggy bear with an aged mother and A DIFFERENT NAME!! My reaction upon reading the issue when it first came out was "Who IS this guy??" (Incidentally, Spider-Man needs a few lessons in architecture! A "bungalow" is a ONE story building.)

Very true, JB. Of course even when he was being a nice guy ("I think he WANTED us to escape from that water tank!") he was putting people into death traps instead of just walking away while they're unconscious. I preferred Flint Marko over William Baker, personally.
