Not sure if this is widely known (had a quick search, revealed nothing) but I have a clear memory of seeing the Byrne family crest hanging on the wall of Doctor Doom's Castle in one of John's early-80s Fantastic Four stories. Being a Byrne myself (and having had the same image adorning my non-castle childhood home) I recognised it instantly.
Anyone else share the memory? Was a lovely touch.

Yup. I learned about the coat of arms when I was about 16.
Note the antique spelling! And to think I have trouble with people mispronouncing "Byrne"! The distinction doesn't show in this image, but the hands are silver, and the chevron white. The family motto is Certavi et vici -- "I have fought and conquered".

Excellent. So I wasn't imagining it.
The one that hung in our hall had a mermaid combing her hair atop it. Was a freaky banshee-like image that always unnerved me.
I went to an all-Irish-language primary school, so was called Seán Ó'Broin [pron: "brin"] for years. When I lived in England I'd get called "Byron" a lot, or receive letters in the post addressed to a Mr. Brynes.

Nice. But the mermaid on our tapestry wasn't as "come hither" and inviting. Had a more "gaze upon me and turn to stone, little child!" vibe.

One of the funniest single panel gags I recall was a drawing by Charles Rodrigues of a rather bored looking mermaid sitting on a rock reading a book titled "Fellatio".

After reading this post, I went looking for my family crest. Every page I went
to had a different crest that they claimed was mine and they wanted money
to download the image or get a poster. Obviously scams. How do you find
the actual crest and how does one know if it is authentic?

Byrne is the Irish equivalent of Smith. LOTS of them. My maternal grandmother's family are Byrnes and in Wicklow, where I grew up, it is an extremely common. (I think I have posted before that different Byrne families have nicknames to distinguish them).
