The first art I got I actually won. Bo Hampton was doing
a signing at the local comic store and they held a
raffle. The second place(!) prize was the original cover
sketch for Legends of the Dark Knight #35.

After I won it, I felt compelled to buy a page from the
same book.

George Perez, Avengers vol. 3, issue 15, page 8. Interesting fact: the last panel has a drawing of Wanda's face on overlay that is reflected on Iron Man's mask that was not used in the final book. A "hidden" treasure just for me. :)

This was my very first piece of original art.

I loved this story in particular as it reminded me of how fun comics were when I was a kid and Dad used to take me to the drug store every Saturday for a Coca-Cola, a bag of peanuts, and a comic book.

As I grew older, JB was the first artist I knew by name and made a conscious effort to find his work, and I couldn't be happier to have this in my collection.

I'm surprised this is your first piece, Lloyd.  Most of the stuff you post is much older.  I always had this impression you have been collecting for many years.

This was my first piece of original art that I purchased.

This was the first piece that I ever commissioned at a con.

Wilson, I didn't know about original art as a collectible until I first saw it here at the JBF. I've tended to keep my collection related to things I enjoyed as a kid, or things that evoke that enjoyment.

My wife has been very supportive about this being my primary hobby, and has helped me snag a lot of the things in my collection. She enjoys the collection with me, though she has no nostalgic interest in it---for her it is strictly about whether she like the art or not. She enjoys various forms of art very much, and she is a lot more interested in technique than subject matter.

My first piece was from DOA about seven years back. I was shocked to see
that there were still some pieces from the Man of Steel mini-series available
so I got one page that had Superman on it. It is in storage now but that is
one I would never get rid of.

I also have a six page complete "Betty" story from Archie comics that I
framed. It looks cool on a wall.

Where do most of you guys buy your original art or commissions? Is it mostly
eBay or do you go to auction sites?

My first purchase of original comic art from San Diego Comic-Con 1987:

It's got the Argo, Nova, IQ-9, Leader Desslok, and only $50 (I believe) at the time.  What more can a STAR BLAZERS fan ask for?

=======

I mostly have bought directly from the artist or through his dealer.

I buy mostly from secondary dealers, some from ebay and others from comicartfans.com or through primary artist dealers. If you want to know some of the better ones I'd be happy to tell you. Just drop me a line.

My first original art purchase was a JB commission...still my favorite piece of artwork that I own, proudly framed on the wall.

The first piece of actual comic book art was this awesome page from Wonder Woman 103 (I think). JB drawing Darkseid...what could be better? I LOVE the panel layout as well. I think JB's panel layouts and design do not get praised enough...
