It's also *unique* original art: no one owns a printed version of it!

••

Careful! The language of collecting, especially in comics, can be tricky sometimes, but "original art" is not something that can be diluted. Publication in no way makes a piece any less "original".

This is a point that seems sometimes to be lost on people who collect comics, and are used to dealing with items that can often be found in huge quantities. Some years back I came across an Overstreet style price guide for original art, and flipping thru it I found certain pieces listed as "Rare". The absurdity there is that no piece of original art can be any more "rare" than any other. Whether it's the Mona Lisa or a page by Rob Liefeld, there is, after all, only ONE of any piece.

And that's as "rare" as it gets!

I thought "rare" was used more loosely, meaning it's rare from that time frame of an artist's career or from the history of the book...

Another question for you art buyers then. Has anyone got any specific instances of making a profit on the buying and reselling any original art? Just curious.

Anytime i've had to sell an origianl art i've bought, it's been at a loss, to be honest.   Even still, there's really only one piece i wished i didn't have to sell.

I had a pretty good collection going for awhile. I bought the pieces at a time when EBAY was just getting started and the original market was just being fully realized. I never lost money. Never made huge profits , but i never lost either.I sold at the right time though. Pre economic collapse. Timing is everything. So is availability of particular artists, pieces, and whether there is a buzz about them at the current time.

I don't collect original art (not enough funds unfortunately), but when came across the "rare" description I always though it meant that Artist X only drew 50 pages in his life (or only 50 pages survived until our days) and that's one of them, unlike Artist Y which has 100000 pages "in the market"...

Hey Armindo.

Your icon cracks me up. I am currently working on a Love Boat video game as i speak which features an "Issac pick." We play clips of him doing that gesture.
