Over in the latest FOURTH WORLD thread, Joe Hollon posted this image of the first page of original comicbook art he bought:

As it happens, I still have the first page I bought, this SGT ROCK by Russ Heath:

How about the rest of you collectors? Do you still have/remember your first piece of original comicbook art?

Sure, I remember.
It's a Conan page by "BIG"John Buscema.
Searching for it right now…

Here it is :
Savage Sword of Conan, issue #225, page 7.
Pencils and inks by Mr Buscema himself.

I won this item on eBay in 2002 and I couldn't believe nobody pushed the final amount higher than the $89 USD I paid for it.
Prior to that lucky experience, I had no idea of prices and I was pretty sure I would never be able to afford an original from such a master.
Soon enough, I started on hunting for a piece of original art from each of my favorite artists : Gil Kane, Frank Robbins, Ross Andru, Gene Colan, Dave Cockrum, Wally Wood, Russ Heath, Steve Ditko, Georges Tuska, Keith Giffen, Don Heck, John Byrne, etc…
Some didn't enter the tracklist yet… So I'm still prowling, beware!

Lousy iPhone photo, great art !

My first (and only) piece of original art was one of John's - page 6 of a team up between Ghost Rider and Daredevil, from Ghost Rider V1 #20 (1976).  I still have it.

A stunning action, 3 panelled page Gene Colan page from Daredevil #23. Though I had it matted and framed before ever getting it scanned (Back in 2000 or so), this page has it all.... locked in battle with the Gladiator... the Masked Maurader sinisterly schedming in a control room... while Foggy and Karen wonder where Matt Murdock is. I adore the page and picked it up long before I started collecting artwork because it held special significance for me in that it capped off my finishing a complete DD run that my best pal had been attempting before dying of leukemia.... great page and special meaning for me. The perfect start to what has become a bittime hobby.

I only have one piece so far, but I think it's a good one.

It's not from a comic book, but a comic strip. A 1977 daily from a strip called Big Ben Bolt, a boxing scene by Joe Kubert.

It was from Mike Grell's Warlord #26 page 15.

I got it on E-bay.  I was so excited that I won.

No
The first ever page I won on eB** was a James Fry Excalibur page (the fill-in issue with the doggy super team) That was 3 years ago and I sold it. But I still have the 2nd page, also a later Excalibur issue.
I wish I had better bidding experience when I started bidding because I failed to win Sienkiewicz NMutants pages and JB She-Hulk for quite cheaper than today's price at the times.
I sort of have decided to not collect recent pages with no lettering on it as I want the real, closest to what's published art. But I sometimes lapse.
Also I never buy sketches or commission art. The value for me is in the fact the page has been published and read by (hopefully) millions.
Lastly, I'm really puzzled at prices for US artists and European artists.
The bottom price here for somewhat not even famous in our much smaller market is about 400 euros. And I managed to get big name US comic art for  less than $100. I still don't understand the prices. I guess the US comic art market is a real open, active market whereas in Europe original art collecting doesn't exist for amateur collectors like me.

I only collect pages from Morrison/Porter's run on JLA, and I would never let them go.  Funny, I can't remember which is the very first one I ever bought though...

••

Interesting! Over the years I have met collectors who are interested only in covers, or only splash pages, or only action shots. Even collectors who concentrate on one particular artist. This is the first time I have heard of someone collecting only from one particular run on a title.
