Thanks for all your kind words. From all reports, this seems to have been a relatively easy exit. As noted, he collapsed on Friday afternoon, and did not regain consciousness thereafter. He was in no pain that could be detected, and when the actual end came, it came suddenly, with his blood pressure having been stable until it abruptly dropped and he was gone. According to his wishes, no "heroic measures" were taken to revive him. One thing I will say for Canadian doctors, they do seem to be a lot more cooperative on the whole matter of DNR requests. There were no quibbles from either his attending physician or the Chief of Medicine. Strangest part in all this -- and I am sure those of you who have lost friends and relatives will be familiar with this one -- since it was my habit to call my Dad to tell him any news, a bit of muscle memory keeps trying to make me pick up the phone to tell him about this! Here's one of his favorite photos of himself, taken in 1946, when he was 26, just before he was "demobbed" out of the British Army. And here's another favorite, Mom & Dad on their wedding day, 1949. (Those who fret about "civil unions", take note! They were married at the West Bromwich town hall, and it stuck for 59 years!)
