One of my favorite stories was where Spider-man stops the Burglar, prevents Uncle Ben from dying and goes Hollywood.

Another favorite was What If Dr Strange had not become sorcerer supreme. Baron Mordo does and Stephan becomes a disciple of the Dread Dorrmammu. But, not to worry, Doc eventually comes around and becomes a master of both white and black magic.

The issue Bill C. mentions above may be the very first "What if...?"  I ever read, fresh off the spinner rack.  I loved the art by Pat Broderick, and I loved the whole "What if ...?" concept, and sought out the back issues at the flea market.

Spinner racks, flea markets...I drove well over ten miles today trying to find a venue that either (A) sells comic books, or (B) sells comic books and bothered to order "JBNM" #(3)2.  No luck.

I've also thought that Civil War would have made a much-better "What If?" concept -- one issue and done!

Brian, your post would have merely been hilarious if it hadn't been so true.  It's the true that makes it sad.

"What If the Fantastic Four Had Not Gained Their Super Powers?" is one of my very favorite stories!  It should have been included in one of the John Byrne Fantastic Four Visionaries volumes.

I want to add one more.  What if Wolverine Killed the Hulk was used for two stories.

Of course, the first part was done in the Hulk.

The second part was used in Ultimate X-Men where Wolverine joins the X-Men with the same intentions as in the What If story.

Wow, Brian. I didn't mean to trigger such an outpouring of What If commentary, but you certainly answered my question in spades while making it quite clear that the former House of Ideas is now the House of Explosive Decompression of Previously One-Issue Thought Experiments.

Here's a What If scenario they may want to latch onto:

"What If the entire Marvel Universe rebooted itself back to [insert your favorite pre-Secret Wars era]?"

Spider-Man would be her herald, and he'd have to get past the Interstellar Six to get her planetary medicine to her.

Brian: "What If #12 "What If Rick Jones had become the Hulk?" Rick is now a non-descript Abomination knock-off known as A-Bomb."

Rick Jones also did become another Hulk (briefly) just previous to the Todd McFarlane Hulk run era.
