This is, of course, the same FF which is now deemed "second only to Lee and Kirby"

This is going to sound like I'm just trying to butter up our host, but honestly I consider John Byrne's run on Fantastic Four to be far and away superior to Lee and Kirby's. This is not to detract from what they did -- Lee and Kirby are legends without whom the world of comics as we know it would not have existed. But for complexity of storytelling, depth of character, realism, and heart, I think Byrne beats Lee. He made you care about his characters, about who they were and not just what they did. And that is the hallmark of great fiction. And as far as artwork goes, I find Byrne's attention to detail, cinematic framing, and organic style to be superior to Kirby's work, which always seemed a bit stiff and old-fashioned.
