Chad, I fear you're skirting dangerously close to crossing that "too old to still be reading comics" line... I might be, if I wasn't coming at it from a writing perspective. Some aspects of these characters can be speculated upon. Kind of like Superman's cape in the JB era always getting torn to shreds or burned away in battle. There wasn't a need for that to ever happen, but there was a logic behind it in the physics of Superman. We don't accuse JB of being "too old" to write/draw superhero comics because of that, do we?

JB, how did you end up getting involved in ending the Shadow War that Hawkman had been involved in for the last several years (at the time of Action Comics 588, shown above)?

I've often thought Blue Falcon's cowl with some enhancement might be a cool Hawkman look. The wings on the head thing sometimes seems a bit much.

They asked if I would mind wrapping up the Shadow War storyline in ACTION, so I did. Then I turned in my proposal for Hawkman, and it turned out they wanted a CONTINUATION of the stuff that had just led the book to being cancelled!!

Lawd I hate those stupid wings! Like real hawks have wings on their heads, right? Legend has it we have Roy Thomas' Golden Age fascination to blame. He wrote a letter asking for the wings to be restored. On my wall I have three Kubert Hawkman pages, all from BRAVE & BOLD, and none have the %#^#%ing helmet wings!!

Hawkman looks really cool there, but I have always thought that Hawkwoman had the cooler helmet.

WHAT?!? You would strip Katar of his "honor wings"?!? Why, you...where did I put my medeival mace? Actually, Chad, on JB's posted ACTION cover, Hawkman DOES appear to be wearing a helmet somewhat like the Blue Falcon's (notice his eyes are NOT behind the hawk's, but, rather, below the beak), albeit with wings. As for the cape/wings issue, it would seem unlikely for a superhero to precede a fight with, “would you gentlemen excuse me for just a moment - I have to remove my...”. As for Superman's torn cape, aside from the cool visual aspect, I think JB just wanted some way to keep Ma Kent busy while Pa was out plowing. If Batman's cape gets ripped, so what -- he's RICH! He can afford new ones.

JB doing a Hawkman series of his own? With guest inks by Joe Kubert? Or Murphy Anderson? The mind boggles and the spine tingles! “Of all the words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these...”!

I'm pretty sure I discovered Hawkman in Justice League of America 200, where I aslo was introduced to Zatanna, Elongated Man and others.
The Kubert splash of him whacking Supes with a mace is one of my favorite all-time images.

Winged helmet notwithstanding, this is probably the best Hawkman drawing I've ever seen.
It was for sale awhile ago. I coulda sold a couple of kids for medical experiments, but...
