Mr. Byrne, do you have a favorite version of Hawkman? And if you were working on a Hawk book, would you use this one or do something different.

My favorite Hawkman is the one I first "met", as drawn by Joe Kubert in THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD 34.That version has been so thorough screwed up, tho, there is really nothing left to work with.

I think Hawkman (and Hawkgirl/woman) were the most bungled of all characters after "Crisis". In retrospect, the Golden Age/Earth Two versions should have been eliminated. Despite very different origins, the two versions of the Hawks were just too similar and writers have spent years trying to make sense out of them -- and all the while, making the situation worse and worse!

I liked the All-Star version of the Hawkman and Girl, I did not like the 90's stuff at all.

Allowing Tim Truman to do that Hawkworld series a few years ago, then making it in continuity was just one of the serious mistakes DC made with one of their better characters, IMO. Don't even get me started on Zero Hour. As Thom says above, DC didn't really think the implications of Crisis all the way through with several of their heroes, Hawkman was one of the worst cases.

But if anybody could fix the character and bring him back to something recognizable, I'm sure you could JB.

Joe Kubert's Silver Age Hawkman was cool and different. An alien married couple fighting crime on earth and posing as museum curators? How fun and different! I read the showcase presents volume and I noticed my interest in the stories dropped off sharply once Kubert was no longer the artist. I'm not familiar with any other version of the character really and nor do I have much interest in finding out.

The current Carter Hall version is a pretty good fix, I think. It makes the best of the most screwed up (continuity-wise) of DC's characters.

Except they turn the hero into a constantly angry blood-thirsty barbarian, maiming and torturing opponents such as cutting off the hand of Matter Master and pulling off the wings of Man-Hawks. Hardly the type of hero you'd think that would be chairman of the JSA for half a century.

Hawkworld was the first clear indication that DC didn't have the foggiest idea what they were doing after Crisis on Infinite Earths.
The problems inherit in what happened with Wonder Woman, Batman, and the Legion were all glimpses of the problem; but if their stated purpose of trying to make all of the stories easier to understand was true, Hawkworld wouldn't exist.
With that in mind, I think Johns has done okay in clearing up the problem with Hawkman, given what he had in front of him.

Andrew, I agree with you on Hawkworld. Trying to make everything jive with what was left at the end of Crisis no. 12 was mind-numbing.
