geez, they've been doing this with EVERY OMNIBUS FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS. 2 covers: One original, and one redone. Do we need to moan and groan every time a new omnibus comes out? Or will there be a point when the redone covers are actually preferred? Like say, X-Force Omnibus? Which, of course, will feature a new Jack Kirby cover recreating Liefeld's original...

Dave, nobody will be able to redo a Liefeld cover. I truly believe Liefeld is trying his best to draw well. Everyone else trying to recreate it would have to intentionally attempt to draw badly. For the record, I love Garney's artwork, old and new. I actually like this piece as a cover recreation, although I do think the shield is a bit small. But, if I'm buying an expensive book full of Kirby's work, I want a Kirby cover.

Quite frankly, I'm impressed the new artist was able to restrain himself from adding the pouches and chicken feathers.

It's damned annoying, but the main thing is that if you're forewarned you can make sure you get the proper Kirby version... thanks to JB and the others who explained this. It reminds me of the first CD pressing of Bob Dylan's superlative Blonde On Blonde album, which featured two 'cropped' songs. Another untampered-with version of the record was eventually released in CD; I wonder how many people bought both, as I was obliged to?

It's a pity they didn't restore the original cover - as published it was heavily revised, with a Kirby/Sinnott Cap from another story replacing the original figure's head, and a shadow (recognisable as Zemo) removed from the background. I think the original was better.

My first encounter with the Lee/Kirby Captain America was the origin of the Red Skull in BRING ON THE BAD GUYS back in the '70s. I must've read that story a million times as a kid, so I'm really eager for this omnibus edition. Were many of the Silver Age Cap stories set during World War II, or was the Red Skull story a special case?

JB, how is Marvel "pissing on" Kirby's Cap 100 cover any more than you "pissed on" his iconic cover for Amazing Fantasy 15 with Spider-Man: Chapter One #1? I don't see a difference and I am sure Ron Garney wouldn't, either.
For the record, I prefer the original covers on my Marvel Omniboo, but I think Garney's cover is as nice a tribute as JB's Chapter One cover (or all the other fine recreations and homages to classic covers our host has done over the years).

It seems that if the new cover can draw in the NuMarvel kids so they get a look at Kirby's work inside, then this is probably good thing (considering there's a Kirby original cover as well).

I like the new cover and as a commissioned recreation it would be awsome. As a cover to a book full of Kirby's work it just doesn't work. And that's just the thing, Ian, Chapter One had JB art in it, not Kirby or Ditko...
I wonder, why didn't they have Garney draw his version of the corner box and kept the original?

What happened was that Syd Shores for some reason took it upon himself to erase and redraw Cap's face when he inked the cover. Stan was not happy at all with the result which is why an old Kirby/Sinnott face was pasted over. Restoring the original without the paste up wouldn't really get us closer to Kirby's original intent since it has a Shores-drawn face.

I'll second what Dave Aikens said: they've been doing this with EVERY Omnibus since they started releasing them! I can't think of a single Marvel Omnibus that hasn't had a modern variant cover.
I used to be a purist and I always asked for the original covers, but one day during a discussion at ye olde comic shop a couple of guys (including the store owner!) came up with a very good point: If you do happen to get the modern cover art, the original art is still inside! You don't miss out on seeing the original, you just get a little something new on the front.
Now I don't really care which cover I get, as long as what's inside is better than the garbage they put out today I'm okay with however they want to package it. These things are the only Marvel purchases I make anymore.

Discovered yesterday that the Kirby version IS available -- as a VARIANT.That's right, folks! The original Jack Kirby version of this cover is the VARIANT. The version posted at the top of this thread is the "real" cover, Kirby's is "the other one".
