I don't think any artist did it this way, but I picture Wolverine's claws as a combination of blades running smoothly to a taper along the length of his claws.

Whether or not there is universal agreement upon it, Dave Cockrum very clearly established the round top, flat bottom "D" shaped profile of Wolverine's claws in GIANT-SIZED X-MEN 1.

Doesn't that sorta kinda make anything other than that shape WRONG?

After reading Hulk #181 recently, I was surprised to notice Wolverine's claws NEVER retracted.....even when he was knocked unconscious. GS X-Men #1 must have established the claws could retract (per JB's post above) but that may not have been the original intent.

It was not. Originally, they were just part of the gloves.

Wolverine's claws always reminded me of just retractable ninja tekko kagi, which from what I've seen are flat like Dave Cockrum drew, though a quick google shows most a lot of people have modified newer ones to look more like Wolverine's movie claws.
