They retract into his forearms. This gives you a clue as to how much they are able to curve. My two penneth is: not very much.•• They have enough of a curve for it to be visible when seen nearly end on. I apply a wee bit of artistic license when drawing Wolverine's claws, so that they tend to curve more than would be practical for them to retract into his forearms (unless he looked like Popeye -- and say a small prayer of thanks to the comicbook gods than no flavor of the month superstar has thought of THAT yet!).

Here Wolverine pops them through the palm of his hand: Daredevil # 196: http://www.comics.org/issue/37591/cover/4/?style=default **** Look closer. The miscoloring of the thumb doesn't help, but the claws are coming out of the right place.

But how can his fingers be above the claws, rather than below?

That DAREDEVIL cover is an interesting lesson -- it points to how much of what we thought was Frank was actually Klaus. And, yes, Wolverine's hand is rotated, palm up, in that shot. What appears to be his thumb is actually the wrinkles on the side of his hand. I did consider a scene in which he would be forced to pop his claws thru the palms of his hands, tho, during my X-MEN days, but the opportunity did not present itself.

In that cover image, Wolverine would have been beating up on a 4 foot tall victim. I haven't read that issue, was it supposed to be a child?

That's just how Sam Kieth draws -- unless you think Wolverine has claws stashed in his thighs, too!

I have always perceived them as sharp on the underside/inside the curve, despite the image from JB's early X-Men ish (where the poke-holes are visible in the control panel)_ _ _ _ _ _ V V V V V V (Kinda like so) The slicing edge is inside like a scythe.

At work we use a motorized handle which spins a circular blade that holds the edge on the inside. The wiz-knife is used to slice off the fat from hams. (The slicing occurs inside the circle)

The Wolverine mini-series came out just as I started to go to comic shops, as opposed to buying comics from newstands (My hometown didn't have a comic shop so I could only buy things three months late). When it dawned on me that newstands were not getting the mini-series I had to get to the comic shop. By that time, the mini-series was on issue 3. I saw the blades (Which seemed to now pop between the fingers in some panels while the gloves still had the (CURVED!) sheaths on the top of the hand) and a roughed up Wolverine and though, 'Wow, someone's done a real number on him. Swapping the claws out for blades must have wrecked him up a bit' Imagine my surprise when I finally tracked down issues 1 and 2 and found nothing of the sort had happend. It was just artistic license that made no sense. terrible, terrible decision
