Yeah -- Breevort does seem to get very puffed up about being the world's tallest midget, doesn't he?It's hard to pick out one single thing that does the most damage to the state of the American comicbook industry, but diminished expectations has to be high on the list.

The announcement that there will be a 'sequel' (ah, Hollywood-speak) to the 'chart-topping' Superman: Earth One might signify the direction the Big Two will follow. Instead of serialized books, they may release 'graphic novels' periodically. I'm not sure if that line of thinking would work, I figure the biggest appeal of comics is getting a monthly 'fix'.
At the same time, the guys running the Big Two would probably feel better about themselves as being creators of 'graphic novels', rather than comic books. Bah!

I find the thinking behind releasing the sequel to Superman: Earth One to be a little short-sighted and quick out of the gate. While it has topped the charts as far as Diamond is concerned, has it actually accomplished in bringing in "new readers" that weren't otherwise reading comics, Superman or otherwise? How much of the sales is that young adult market the book was supposed to be tailored to meet? Does it have any kind of shelf-life that makes it worthwhile to keep in print? Will the sales still be strong at bookstores next week? If it's only to comic readers, there's no reason to expect that the second volume will not follow the same significant drop in sales that already exists between first and second issues. Meanwhile the news that they are pulling JMS off the monthlies of Superman and Wonder Woman mere months of the promotional hubaloo of assigning him the books is burning bridges with quite a few fans.

Funny thing, upon hearing this announcement my first thought was; Every Secret Wars needs a Secret Wars II.

Um, guys, I thought they were both pretty horrid. At least that's the parallel I was trying to make.

It had some nice Mike Zeck art going for it.•• A lot of it was Zeck being forced to trace Shooter's layouts. I sometimes wonder what SWI would have looked like if it had pure, unadulterated Zeck art. THAT would have been SOMETHING!!

Tracing Shooter's layouts?
No wonder the art seemed pretty tame for Zeck.
I'm a big fan of Zeck's art on Master of Kung Fu, but was unimpressed by Secret Wars.
