Michael wrote: "All of which is explained in the reat of the issue and the rest of the series."That may be true, but it did read more like it was stuff the reader should ALREADY know rather than informative story matter. As a reader I don't need the writer to 'hold my hand', but I don't like the writer treating the story like it's a race and I have to keep up.

What planet is that? Who are those strangely dressed humans? What's that rocket for? Where's it going? Is there something inside it? Who are the people in the last panel? Are they Black?*** All of which is explained in the rest of the issue and the rest of the series. ---- Which emphasizes the point that the one page is far from a "perfectly executed" origin story. It works as a teaser, but not as a standalone origin.

Frank, not sure what you're trying to say with those panels. But notice how Mr. Byrne drops the information in while telling a good story. This isn't an origin issue, or even a story about Superman at all. It's all about Luthor's ego. And despite all Lex's resources and cunning, he isn't able to see past the disguise because he can't bring himself to believe that someone so powerful would hide behind a human facade. Are there tidbits like the vibrating trick (only done because Superman knew the camera thing was following him, IIRC)? Yes. And I love those. But the story has little to do with the Clark identity and lots to do with Luthor's character, which was just being established post-Crisis at this point.

Superman: Man of Steel by a country mile for me.
I was just leaving high school when word filtered out that Byrne was taking over Superman and I was stoked. I wasnt disappointed, well, not until he left after only 2 years.

Man of Steel. In MoS JB covered so much more than Secret Origin, it's almost sad to compare them. In comparing art from the two... I like Gary Frank's Superman. It does resemble Christopher Reeve. JB's looks like SUPERMAN! I can't even consider Birthright. It just doesn't exist to me. I refuse to except any story that makes Clark a vegetarian and takes away beef bourguignon with ketchup as his favorite meal.

Side-note: JB, do you have any thoughts on the Kirby JIMMY OLSEN material?

Beef Bourguignon with Ketchup is the one universally recognized core aspect of Superman. I think even Siegel and Shuster would agree.

And that is precisely my point. As an origin "recap", that page tells a new reader absolutely NOTHING. Sad thing is, if the script was not so preposterously underwritten, the page could have done its intended job just fine.

By the way; soon we'll have another version to "look forward" to: J Michael Strazynski's SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE.
I'm just stunned by how many times DC feels the need to re-tell what should be a very simple and straight origin.
Which, I need to clarify, was one of my points regarding that ALL STAR page: At least GM kept it down to a page, and didn't spend an entire issue doing yet another re-telling of the origin.
