I'm curious to know, how much of that story was Waid's and how much was editorial?

Waid stated that there were things he was "forced" to include that were derived from or homages to Smallville, since it was immensely popular at the time.

I prefer Superman the Animated Series, but only because of the voice actor on Brainiac

I appreciated JB's "vibration" explanation. This is one of
those "conceits of the genre" that I'm sure most of us have
been bugged by since we were kids. In fact, it bothers me
less now than when I was a kid.

It does seem to me to be one of those concepts that, if not
explained with some form of pseudoscience or the like, puts
Superman's mythos outside the boundaries of the pseudo-
realism that superhero comics have been striving for since
the late 70's. What's the current explanation? Kryptonian
holograms or sensory manipulation?
