Simple poll.  In your opinion (and out of the three possibilities listed), which is the best and/or definitive origin story for Superman?  Just place an 'X' in your choice, and elaborate further if you'd like.  I'll start us off with my choice:

[X] Man of Steel

[  ] Birthright

[  ] Secret Origin

Man of Steel was the origin story I grew up with, so I'm perhaps biased with my choice.  But for me, it still stands as the best, most logical interpretation of the character.  I still love the concept of Lex being evil behind the shadows yet operating publicly as the head of a corporate empire.  It's no wonder DC keeps going back to this even though Lex has been revealed to be a villain numerous times.  And I still believe Clark Kent should be the real person, and Superman the disguise.

Birthright was pretty decent, except for Luthor's scheme to bring down Superman.  I did really enjoy the very end, and I still think it works better that Lex and Clark were friends growing up in Smallville.

Secret Origin comes across as too hollow and too much of a patchwork of various Superman mythology.  Nothing truly original, emotional, or fun was presented in the story IMO.

Birthright. Vegetarianism is quintessential to Superman. Seriously...

Maybe it was a crops-only farm?

No contest here:
MAN OF STEEL.

It's not perfect, but it delivers charatcerisation that the other two stories don't come close to. And 25 + years later, it's still a VERY enjoyable read.

No brainer -- Man of Steel.

Birthright was boring (I didn't even finish buying it off the shelf, and finished it in trade) -- and while I like the fact that Secret Origin restored the Legion to Superman's mythos, it was still a pretty hollow read.

MoS really captured the essence of Superman.  Each issue delving into a portion of Superman's career before we pick up the main title.

JB's Superman is just not my Superman. Secret Origin is way too half-assed, trying to include so many different takes but not trying to do something new. Birthright is decent.

I was just thinking that as I read the first post.  You beat me to it, JB.

The three choices are all just variations on the original Seigel and Shuster origin.  I like bits and pieces from each version.  I love JB's examination of a Superman just finding his way in the world in Man of Steel.  In Birthright I like the bookend scenes from Krypton and the explanation of the "S" symbols meaning.  Secret Origin's first issue is one of the best Clark/Jonathan stories I've ever read.
