Well at 76, he's certainly earned the right to ditch cons, that's for sure. However it makes me sad, hits me right in the gut to see him describe something as his "last book".

Sorry to hear this.
I was a huge Ellison fan in the 70s, and was fortunate to hear him speak a couple of times, and got his autograph too.
The first time I saw him, back in 1978, he was asked if there was anything he wasn't against. "Penguins," he said. "Penguins are fine."
He also had a diatribe about how people put toilet paper on the rollers. "Men put the toilet paper so that the little flap goes over the top, and women put them on so that the toilet paper hangs down at the bottom. And if you do it the other way around, face it: you're gay."
I wish him well.

Wish I'd found out about this earlier than yesterday, I could have made the trip to Madison pretty easily, but as it is, time and money obstacles are too big to overcome. Harlan is one of my favorite authors and I'd love to go see him. Alas.

Sorry to hear he's on his farewell tour. As those viewing the New Artwork thread know, I had an interesting encounter with Ellison at SDCC in 1987, and was in the SDCC dealers room in either 1988 or 1989 when he made the public address announcement about Jack Kirby's award being stolen...

Pardon me for being obtuse, but....he doesn't have a specific illness or illnesses, but he just somehow _knows_ he's dying? Hmm. Well, anyway, he's a great writer, and he's too damn ornery to die. I bet (and hope) he makes it to 100.

The photo that accompanies the linked article looks like a Jack Kirby drawing come to life. Somehow, I think that description would please Ellison...

I like that he's giving readers a goodbye. He's definitely outspoken, but i like when artists are honest. It shouldn't be such a rare trait!
