The first time I noticed the name was on X-Men #108, and it was because I was pissed that Dave Cockrum was gone! But I had seen JB on MTU and enjoyed it - and by the time I saw his Wolverine in UXM 109 I was mollified. I think my main distaste about 108 was the lack of Wolverine.

The first Byrne comic I ever owned was an issue of Wheelie & the Chopper bunch. I did not realize who the artist was until years later while going through back issues. (I rarely paid attention to the credits then.) I caught up with JB again with Uncanny X-Men #125 (I ended up buying all the back issues back to Giant Sized #1, and they were CHEAP then!). My Marvel buying at the time was very limited, but the big bright yellow flaming bird caught my eye and I was hooked. From that point forward I bought nearly everything JB did and has done.

My first Byrne cover was a reprint of X-Men Classic. I had just found the X-Men, and this one was on the newsstand along with books from the current run at the time, featuring Jim Lee art. I was hooked on both the book and Byrne and Lee right away. It is kind of funny to think now how John's work led me to characters that I loved, but only after being introduced to them by him! The FF and Avengers especially- I found them by looking for Byrne, and found some great books by some cool people including Stern, Buscema, Perez, Epting, Simonson.

••• Hmmm… That Sonja drawing is actually from a fanzine, not a Marvel comic. Possibly even my pre-Pro days! Which means, of course, I received no payment for its original use -- or rhis one! And they didn't even have the decency to include my signature!!! (Coincidentally, someone just put in a commission request for a redo of just that shot!)

I thought it looked familiar. I have it listed as a convention sketch...

I have it listed as a convention sketch...•• It was done in one of my sketchbooks -- and as we can now see from the date, it was right on the cusp of my turning full time Pro. When that image came up on the previous page, one of my first thoughts was how badly I had set up Sonja's stance. Her feet make he look like she is tipping backwards slightly. Now, seeing the original, it is obvious whoever swiped the piece for that cover also rotated it slightly clockwise. In my drawing, our favorite She-Devil's feet are planted firmly on the ground!

First purchased.... Fantastic Four 212, the big battle between Galactus and the Sphinx. I must have read his work prior in a friend's Hulk Annual (with Angel and Iceman). Good stuff!

A friend at school would always trade comics with me and my first exposure to JB was Iron Fist 12, which had Captain America (my favorite) and a couple days later I got Avengers 165 and noticed that artwork was by the same person.

Allow me a moment to understand something: The Red Sonja/Spider-Man cover and the X-Men cover Petter posted were colored circa 1985? Their coloring appears to be computer/Photoshop type coloring, which I highly doubt existed back then. What the hey?!?

X-Men #136 was the first one I bought, but I had been reading a healthy but frustrating collection of previous JB & Cockrum X-Men issues in the months before. Healthy in the sense that he had #94, #95, a bunch of Cockrum, JB's first issue, and a good portion just shy of the beginnings of Dark Phoenix. Frustrating in that issues were missing and it took many years for some of those storylines resolve! Those back issues were so expensive that I didn't read some stories until the "Essentials" edition came out.
Reading #136, I hadn't read any of the build up, but I knew who Jean was and it was pretty shocking. I read it twice in a row - it was a roller coaster of an issue. X-Men had been this gem of a find in my brother's collection, and here it was on the newstands - even better and more out of control than what I had read.
And then after that was Wendigo and then "Days of Future Past" and on to the FF -- JB definitely kept me reading comics longer than I would have without seeing these issues.

My first Byrne comic was X-Men #114:
I was a loyal DC fan up until then, but was getting really dissatisfied with what they were putting out, but wanted to see what else was out there. This comic leapt off of the spinner rack, even tho I knew only one of the "dead" characters and not realizing I knew Beast and Phoenix from my days of picking up the Thomas/Adams X-Men as a kid.
At this point I was hooked. Luckily only had to wait a week for the next issue, and then went about trying to get all of the comics I could of this Byrne guy. From that point on I started buying a lot more Marvel and barely any DC.
