I replied saying I tried to fill the space as much as I could.

I understand that, besides filling the page as much as possible, you try to show the commissioned character as clearly as possible. This limits the "camerawork".

That´s another reason I miss your regular work on covers and interior art - you were THE guy who always came up with the interesting close-ups and different angles.

Paul G: "The gun is a bonus. Looking at this I can only think how scared poor Flash Thompson must have been."

****

I like to see Flash squirm!  Even though he will brag in the end about how that crumb Doom didn't scare him.

I'm going to make a bold move here and announce in this public forum that you, Flash Thompson, are a liar.

I'd hardly call FF 5"s version a "false start"! Doom there wore a more "realistic" armor -- it looked like something that a human being could actually wear. The later versions reverted to the impossible joints we see most of the time in armored characters.

We can only guess why Doom's armor was different when he retuned in issue 6, but looking just now at the last page from 5, hanging on my Studio wall, I cannot help but notice that Kirby did not draw the original, more detailed armor consistently even from panel to panel! He may well have decided to sacrifice detail and "realism" upon the altar of consistency!

++++++++

Well, by "false start", I mean, "something either Lee or Kirby or both were unsatisfied with".

Personally, I vastly prefer the revised suit to the original. Setting aside the fact that the whole Supreme Monarch bit came in later as a "reveal", where would a ruler like Doom be without his cape?

(Interestingly enough, there is a hint of a cape on the splash of FF 5, as I recall, but not in the rest of the story.)

There's no reason to assume dissatisfaction, either. Kirby rarely drew anything the same way twice -- anything more complicated than a jumpsuit, anyway!

The way the books were done back then, it's not hard to imagine Stan calling Jack up and saying "This Doctor Doom guy looks great! I want to use him in the next issue, with Sub-Mariner!" And Jack thinking "He's coming back already? Better make the outfit easier to draw!"

The very same reason I love George Herriman's Karzy Kat strip!

I don't think so.
