Same here!

To me, the X-Men were the NEW X-Men. The original team belonged to a different geological era.

JB, who came up with Jason Wyngarde? Mastermind was there from the start?

I was always confused when I read the original X-Men comics by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and others when Ice Man would be referred to as their weakest member in some of the stories. I always assumed this had to be an age thing: Bobby is the youngest, so he is considered the weakest. But, really, Angel could fly... and that was it! Sure, he could fly well, but Bobby could freeze Warren's wings and ground him.

••

Mastermind was, of course, a member of the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, created by Stan and Jack. When Chris and I were shopping around for someone who could "turn" Phoenix, I suggested using him, and came up with the name Jason Wyngarde, and his "disguised" look, based on British actor Peter Wyngarde, who had, at that time, most recently played a character called Jason King.

If you check Peter Wyngarde's IMDb page, you will find this mentioned among the trivia!

Was Sebastian Shaw a similar inspiration?

I came up with the look for each of the other members of the Hellfire Club, based on Robert Shaw, Orson Welles and Donald Sutherland. Chris came yp with their names.

(I have sometimes wondered if his occasional confusion over whether or not "Jason Wyngarde" was Mastermind's real name was due to Chris not having named the character!)

This seems like a shoehorn to me, to put it mildly.

Thanks. The Hellfire Club...what damage it did to my young,
impressionable mind!

Angel became my favorite instantly, tho I related to Cyclops more.  As a kid I really didn't need him to be stronger than the other X-Men.  Lee and Kirby just had him love his power, he understood that Jean loved Scott and they just had him do some cool stuff.

He wasn't as delicate is he would become in the 80s.

I love this sequence.  Threatened with death, Angel fights on.

Once again, I go away for a few days and I miss another awesome piece. Great work, JB.

That Hellfire Club storyline could easily have been adapted to the big screen.
