I think Angel's hollow bones was an unnecessary ret-con in OHOTMU... He's got big wings that enable him to fly, that's enough. And the lighter than normal so it's physically possible explanation means he can never carry anything or anyone heavier than a dog, which I'm sure he has many times.

The X-Men (classic or all-new) have never really been that interesting to me apart from the creative teams. I don't care much for anything pre-Adams/Thomas or post- Byrne/Cockrum/Claremont. Cyclops (and to a lesser extent Jean/Marvel Girl/Phoenix) was by far the most appealing an interesting of all the characters.Still, a wonderful piece, JB. (P.S. Nice, Lars!)

Reed's water, Sue's air, Johnny's fire, Ben's earth. **** This seems like a shoehorn to me, to put it mildly. I mean, Reed as water? And, aside from most civilians referring to him as "the rocky guy," what does Ben really have to do with earth? Sue as any kind of air elemental is also quite a stretch. Johnny, I'll give you.

Thanks guys! All the credit goes to the Chief though, for being all creative-thinking and coming up with the costume switch gag in the first place.

That COMIC READER cover was one of my earliest indications that some fans were losing their sensa humah. SO many exploding heads! After that issue came out, people were actually approaching me at cons with metaphorical guns a'blazing, no interest in giving me even a moment to say "It was a JOKE!"

Why in the world would fans take offense at that Comic Reader cover? People are so weird sometimes.

It's that very cover than finally made me realize how inappropriate the term "uniform" is when applied to superheroes. Would have been cool if the X-Men, during JB's run, would have at least been shown to train in their "uniforms" in the Danger Room. A justification might have been the added difficulty in not being able to immediately recognize all participants. There is also the fact that JB has a knack for rendering Kirby designs faithfully yet perhaps with an appeal to a broader audience. I've often come across fan costume critiques that amounted to remarks about Kirby's "big knobby" knees -- and not whether the basic design was appealing, distinctive, or representative of the superhero's uniqueness.

I just realized that my introdiuction to this uniform style was the "Elegy" issue following Phoenix's death. And then Kitty Pryde after that!
