Whenever I pick up one of the first issues of X-Men, I get the feeling that Stan and Jack struggled more with the question of putting this team´s powers to "work" than, say, the FF.
---
The FF have the most simple and elegant of all power groups, though. Reed's water, Sue's air, Johnny's fire, Ben's earth. They're just basic elements, and playing with the interactions of them can result in some pretty spectacular displays.
Easier to deal with, I imagine without any evidence, than a team like the X-Men or Avengers where the powers are so specific, and in some cases so wildly wide-ranging. Angel can fly, Cyclops can blast beams from his eyes, Storm can... make tornadoes and hurl lightning and fly and cause floods etc. Hawkeye can use a bow and arrow really well, Iron Man can fly... through a tank.

However, if you look at the art in the early X-Men issues, the Beast actually was "hairy" but in the human sense.
---
I believe that's called "hairy in the Robin Williams sense."
Come to think of it, a young Robin Williams would make a decent live-action Beast! Especially if he played his witty and funny self with the warmth and intelligence of Good Will Hunting or Dead Poets Society.

Speaking of Angel, working on this piece reminded me of something else that I used to notice when I was a lad, reading those early issues. As noted, the original school uniforms are, if not THE best costume designs ever, certainly crowding very close to the top of the list. Yet it used to strike me at least once an issue (and usually more often) that there was something very BLAND about Angel's mask.Scott had his visor, Jean had her hair, Hank had his brutish features. Bobby, of course, didn't wear a mask at all. But Warren's mask had nothing at all to make it stand out. Eventually, he'd get a costume with his hair showing, a la Flash Gordon, but until then his mask, tho in principle just like the other masked members of the team, somehow. . . wasn't!

Reed's water, Sue's air, Johnny's fire, Ben's earth. --- I like the team JB drew in FX that was a more literal example of this.

Good god! My favorite version of my favorite team. Pure perfection. I hate the commissioner of this piece. You lucky bastard.

The orignal school uniforms are some of the coolest around. They have always been a favorite. I really got a kick all those years ago when JB put the "new" team in the school uniforms. I was hoping that Marvel was going to do this for real.

I really loved that cover of the Comic Reader. I even started to draw a story once based on it. Never finished it of course. I still have the pages somewhere. When I win the lottery I'll have JB do the story properly.

When we're dealing with a character like Angel, it's sometimes surprising to realize he is the weak sister of the group. Unlike Scott, Jean and Bobby, for instance, he cannot strike from a distance. And unlike Hank, he does not have tremendous strength (tho he is, logically, stronger than a normal man of his size). Didn't Angel have hollow bones (like a bird) to make him light enough to fly, or was that a later retcon? I always assumed that the need to be lighter neccessitated a light build (including musculature) and therefore made Angel actually slightly weaker than a normal man.
