I hate seams on costumes, ESPECIALLY as depicted above since you don't have seams on the front of your outfits for any practical reasons. The only reason to draw seams like this is so that the costume looks more like something designed by Hollywood.

It's the tail wagging the dog. The costumes in the movies have seams because it helps break up the monotony of the single color as well as defining the curvature of musculature, important since tights tend to flatten muscles and not delineate them. The seams aren't there to impart a reality to the costume but to help make a superhero costume work visually on a live person. Thus, it becomes important from a visual design point of view to have seams positioned as such but not from any practical concern.

But, in the comics, you don't need the seams because the comic doesn't suffer from the same real world constrictions. You don't need seams defining musculature or breaking up areas of flat color because the artist is doing that when he draws the muscles! So, now you have a piece of art that is overly busy AND unrealistic on even more levels even though most people think of seams adding a level of realism. And, it subtracts from the natural dynamics of the character. It makes Batman look more like just a guy in a suit, and less iconic and less dangerous.

Of course, so does the whole idea of Batman franchising himself out. The Batmen of the World was a neat idea at the time as it was about individuals over the world inspired by the hero to follow in his footsteps but still establishing individual identities of their own. This manages to de-unique and lessen the whole lot of them especially Batman and his own mystique.

"Quickly, Robin!  Use the Bat-Scalpel to slice open one of my Bat-Veins!  The tremendous pressure from my gushing blood will knock the Riddler to the ground!  And possibly punch a hole through a brick wall!"

DC continues to gnaw on its own tail. There was a "League of Batmen" story back in the 1960s, as I recall.

More "de-uniquing".  An historical question:  When did all this begin?  Was it Captain Marvel's Marvel Family?

I guess Hawkgirl might be the first. She and Captain Marvel,jr showed up in 1941. Though CM.jr had his own book, so that might be more on point.

The Lt. Marvels debuted before Junior though also in 1941. I would say it's significant in that it is a marked attempt at franchising a hero without actually producing simply a sidekick version of the hero (which are the category in which Hawkgirl and Bulletgirl would both qualify though Bulletgirl beat Hawkgirl by a couple of months).

As far as a hero inspiring unrelated people in another country to take up the mantle and fight thus producing international versions of himself, the earliest I've come across is a Black Terror tale from 1947 where the real Black Terror and Tim investigate reported sightings of them being active in Mexico and encounters a Mexican duo operating as the Black Terrors outfitted in near identical outfits though with a few stereotypical Mexican trappings. As the duo's hearts are in the right place and not bad in a fight, the Black Terror allows them to continue operating as heroes in their adopted guises.

I LOATHE Morrison. I think I have grown tired of DC, as well. I will finish up the storylines I'm currently reading, I think, and stop buying DC. No more GL, no more Flash, no more Birds of Prey.

FU, DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't feel it as strongly as that, Chris, but I understand the sentiment.
I've already dropped all Bat-titles. When comics irritate your rather than give enjoyment, it's time to call it quits. For me, dropping the Bat-titles was a huge step - because I love Batman. I read my first Batman comic in 1979, and he's pretty much always been on my reading list.

I'm still holding onto Superman, though - as he's my all-time favourite.

With the titles JB's doing this autumn, I might actually for the first time pick up more IDW titles than any of the "Big Two".

DC re-boots, ret-cons,  & re-writes its continuity so often that I can't keep up.  Even Marvel's not THAT bad.  Sheesh, DC!  Pick a lane, already!
