This will really muddy the waters---what if all Batman comics were printed in black & white? Would you care whether or not he had an oval?•• Probably my preference for the no-oval look springs from my introduction to the character being principally in black and white. Altho the very first Batman story I read was in color, it was a year or two before I saw him in anything other than the black and white British hardcover "annuals". In black and white the bat, sans oval, really stood out on his chest.

Is the mixing colors thing the reason why Superman seemed to be a "light" blue to me, in one comic, and "dark" blue in others.•• That's just bad printing! The mixing and consistency of inks was never quite an exact science!

JB, you drew Batman without the yellow oval in one his first post-crisis adventures in MAN OF STEEL # 3. Was that something you decided, or was it editorial?

DC had been bouncing back and forth on the oval/no oval question, tending to place the absence in the early days of his career. Since I prefer the no-oval look, I took that as my cue.

I grew up with the oval. My first exposure was probably the Batman TV. Though its hard to pin down, since I discoverd comics around the same time. That said I prefer Batman with out the oval, even though I spent years trying to master drawing it. ( A lot easier than drawing that bloody "S", though!)

I didn't read it yet, but I believe I saw Batman wearing blue without the oval in Neal Adams' Batman: Odyssey. Say what you want about the oval (I like it), but Batman's gotta have it if he's wearing blue. Hopefull, I will get to my comics tonight. Otherwise, this weekend for sure. Still haven't had a chance to read my new Armor Wars II TPB yet either...

A lot easier than drawing that bloody "S", though•• The S is EASY! Follow these simple steps: This is, of course, the "skinny S", which has become pretty much the standard over the years. In this version, as you can see, the S OVERLAPS the surrounding frame. Some artist prefer to place the S entirely WITHIN the frame of the shield, producing the "fat S" we see from time to time.

My first exposure to Batman was the Adam West show, but my first comic book arrived some years later. It was a story from the 1960s in its first and only Italian edition (and for a 9 years old a 30 years old comic book is a sort of ancent relic) , but I couldn't imagine that Batman as "my" Batman. Oval? No oval? Blue cape? Black cape? That was not the problem. The fact is, until the mid Sixties, Batman's costume was recolored RED. A red Batman! How could that be Batman? I wondered why he changed his costume's color, and just ten years later or so I learned it was a change for the Italian edition. No wonder I still think "my" Batman is the one from tv and movies...

JB, do you believe Superman's blue should be lighter or darker?

The S is EASY! Follow these simple steps: ******************* Steps 4 and 5 always foul me up. I end up going to big with them and leaving virtually no room for step 6.
