Thanos said: Why do we blame Kevin Smith? Sure, the story sounds like crap and he is a writer. But if I write a story about MIckey Mouse being a duck rapist and child beater, although that would draw a nice picture of my inner self, I can't imagine Disney EVER publishing it. It's 100% DC's fault.
Harlen Ellison is credited with a story about his 1 day employment with Walt Disney studios. It involved him coming to work and discussing some story ideas, and during lunch joking around about "Micky Porn" detailed and with a spot on "Mickey Voice". by the time he got back to the office they had painted over his name on his parking space and he was asked to leave.
Clearly Disney understands better than current management at DC the importance of brand protection.
Kevin Smith is Kevin Smith and what he will provide on a comic is very definite style that really has no place in a family friendly comic.

You know Keith, I never even thought of that! But I still like Dean's design.

I like the oval. It's iconic, it's pretty, it's a symbol, recognizable, and representative of a golden period in the character's history. Give me oval! Super-heroes all the way! Who says they have to be realistic? It's a fantasy! Colorful characters! "Long underwear characters!" Give me superheroes, not grim and gritty!

And Kevin Smith should go back to producing his highly original, imaginative, quality films. The English Professors, Film Critics, and Intellectual Culture Vultures of the world are missing his dynamic contributions to the Cinema.

The oval is iconic. And a simple, stylized bat isn't? Spider-Man does just fine without a bright circle around his chest emblem--why does Batman need one?

When I think of Batman, I see the Aparo version with the oval. I miss both the oval and the old utility belt. I really liked the changes to the symbol and the pouches for a long time, but I kind of think it is time for a change again. This Aparo drawing of Batman (not so much the actual story), just looks right to me for Batman. I am a child of the 1980's though.

Y'know what? Those dark gray tights with the black trunks don't work for me at all with that baby blue cape and cowl.
I've often wondered if the gray tights were supposed to be gray, or if Batman's costume was all black in "reality." Movies aside, I'm still not sure.
I agree with JB that the oval is a trademarked symbol for Batman, and it works well as the Batsignal. On the costume? Well, what color is the utility belt supposed to be? I'd make the belt black, personally.

I like the oval and I have a certain fondness for that Batman and it's epitomized in the Animated series Batman. He was the handsome, smart, nice, detective Batman that the comics sometimes portrayed. I thought the animated series always got him right. When they changed the symbol to the black bat he changed as well and the tone of the series, he became cynical, jaded and not as nice. I know it's kind of foolish of me but I like a nicer Batman, it's one of the reasons I like JB's portrayal so much.
I've accepted the Black Bat and I realize it's a better design really for Batman but I have a nostalgic fondness for the oval design.

Sorry so late - I know you've all been waiting for my answer: I like 'em both but non-oval wins.

Hate to be a fence-sitter, but I'm not sure I have a preference. Batman is one of relatively few super-heroes whose silhouette is instantly recognizable. Therefore, the details of his costume matter less to me than say, Superman's, whose silhouette is not unique. I wouldn't want Superman's "s" to dramatically change (yeah, I know he doesn't wear the Action #1 version), but I don't mind if Batman's bat symbol gets a tweak.
