Trying to have a rationale discussion about this issue with someone who is so diametrically opposed to gay marriage is often an exercise in futility.  I asked someone simply "how does this affect you?".  I asked them to remove all the bible quotes and to just simply tell me how two people who care about each marrying would negatively impact their lives.  It wouldn't invalidate their marriage.  Unfortunately, they kept going back to the bible to back up their case.  Not one credible point outside of that.

Then I pointed out how each of his parents have been divorced more than once, so how is that upholding the sanctity of marriage?

Things spiraled downward from there.

"It wouldn't invalidate their marriage.  "

Funny, but when we (in Norway) legalized gay marriage (by removing the gender specificity of the original marriage law) some of the opponents actually claimed that by using the same law to accomodate both heterosexual and homosexual marriages, we had legally invalidated their marriages.

So for some bizarre reason, they thought that if two men (or two women) were allowed to use the same law as they did to get married, all heterosexual marriages entered into before the first gay marriage would become legally annulled.

Damn, Byrne, I hate when you give me pause like that.

••

The world gives me constant pause. I seem to be unable to get thru an average week without being reminded, at some point, of that scene in IDIOCRACY where the characters get to discussing what "electrolytes" are.

Joe Bowers: What ARE these electrolytes? Do you even know?

Secretary of State: They're... what they use to make Brawndo!

Joe Bowers: But WHY do they use them to make Brawndo?

Secretary of Defense: [raises hand after a pause] Because Brawndo's got electrolytes.

This was used to help create a scene from The West Wing…It always makes me chuckle.

"Dear Dr. Laura,
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend homosexuality, for example, I will simply remind him or her that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other laws in Leviticus and Exodus and how to best follow them.

1.When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Leviticus 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?
2.I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as stated in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3.I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Leviticus 15:19-24). The problem is, how can I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4.Leviticus 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify?
5.I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
6.A friend of mine says that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Leviticus 10:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
7.Leviticus 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's Word is eternal and unchanging. "

Every time I find myself in church, for one reason or another (usually weddings), I am struck by how many of the self-proclaimed Christians gathered there are busy disobeying the teachings of Jesus just by BEING there! And that's without invoking the OT!

I guess in a way I should be grateful.  I mean, not going to church saves me that pesky 10% thing, and I really, really like sleeping in on Sunday mornings.  And, unlike you poor heteros, I have a built in and ironclad out.  If I'm invited to join/convert/attend a service, I can just point to myself and say "abomination."

You guys are all nuts...clearly heterosexuals make better parents. Link to ABC story on Worst. Mother. Ever.

My heart breaks for these children in ways I can't even begin to describe (and just so there is no misunderstanding, that first line is sarcasm).
