I never really connected with Marrina. I really liked the rest of the AF, but not her... then in the Avengers was even worse. I was always thinking that Namor would be much better alone in those storylines, she was too much "damsel in distress" for my taste. At the same time,  She-Hulk was showing some interest in Namor (now THAT'S a pair!!), which made me dislike her even more.
I was not sad when she died... too bad Namor also left the Avengers at the same time.

edit to add: I do love her origin though...

Just read a character bio of how she was written out/killed off. Sounds like more misogynistic bullshit.

Here's an excerpt form an interview with Roger Stern over his dismissal from The Avengers from a 2009 interview:

Mania: I’m sorry to have to ask you this because Lord knows you’ve rehashed it many times. But why were you fired from Avengers? Word is you and your editor disagreed over storylines. One rumor is he wanted you to make Captain America team leader, replacing Monica as someone who is incompetent.

RS: Something like that. I was asked to replace Captain Marvel with Captain America. And while I like Captain America a lot, I thought that unwise. I sent editorial a memo pointing out that dumping Captain Marvel at that time would look both racist and sexist. I suggested that we rethink that particular idea. Instead, I received a message that I was fired.

Mania: What’s ironic about this whole thing is that after you were fired from the book, Cap still didn’t lead the Avengers, much less return to them because he quit being Cap as seen in Captain America #332-350. That didn’t make any sense. Comment?

RS: I wasn't privy to any decisions made after I was fired, so I don't know why any of that happened.

Mania: Had you remained on the book, what were some of your plans?

RS: After all these years, I don't recall much, but I'd hoped to feature Loki in issue #300. And I'd gotten tentative approval to have Power Man join the team, resolving the loose threads from the last issue of Power Man & Iron Fist. Luke was going to be cleared of Iron Fist's murder. I planned to reveal that Fist's old enemy Master Khan – in the guise of Tyrone King – had framed Luke. I passed that scenario off to John (Byrne) who later used it in the Namor book.

I really enjoyed the team of Stern/Buscema/Palmer.

Some of my favorite Avenger stories.

In my opinion Roger Stern was the best Avenger writer, slightly edging out Roy Thomas.

This is a good place for a question to JB that just occurred to me:

Last night I watched one of my favorite movies, Local Hero, directed by Bill Forsyth and starring Peter Riegert and Burt Lancaster, which I know has a couple fans on this board.

One of the characters is a marine researcher named Marina, who displays amphibious characteristics and has a love interest named Danny.  That's about it for similarities, but it's at least an interesting coincidence.

According to IMDB, the film was released on February 17, 1983, and for all I know a comic with an August 1983 cover date would have been completed before then.  Have you seen Local Hero?  Assuming it was even possible, could it have influenced the character in Alpha Flight?

Here's a link to the trailer, in case it rings any bells: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4WQZbGMrl4

I'd call it a case of parallel development.  "Marrina" is a woman's name and a nautical term, so it's a natural (clever, but natural) name for a mermaid or mermaid-like character.

I read the List one shot some days ago. Glad to see Alan Davis on the X-Men again, but when I saw the Marrina monster... another chance to say "they can't let go".

Create something new, please!
