By the way, I hope everyone realizes we're all screwed here. There is NO way any of us could ever give JB a gift that could top that gift.

Hi Folks,
My son Matt and I made it back from JB's to our home in Southern Maryland about an hour ago. I logged onto JB's Forum to see what's up and saw JB had started this thread. I knew JB would like the Kubert Captain America, but I am blown away by how much he liked it!
I've known JB and been selling his artwork for well over 20 years now, and it's still a thrill to make these trips to his place; but this one was something special. JB's stories and artwork have brought be a lot of pleasure over the years; hell; I still have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure I'm not dreaming when I think about how cool it is to be the guy selling artwork for my all-time favorite comics creator. Anyone who has been to my place knows how much of JB's artwork is framed on the walls. Given how much JB and his creations have meant to me over the years, it was simply pure joy for me to help get him something he really wanted; let's face it, JB has a LOT of cool stuff, and it's really tough to get him something he does not already have!
In reading this thread, I'm sorry to hear Joe Kubert had declined other requests for Captain America illos and I'm truly humbled that he accepted mine. When I made the request, I stated up front that it was for JB and I asked that Mr. Kubert personalize the piece for JB's upcoming birthday. I did mention that JB had previously told me that one of his "dream pieces" would be a Joe Kubert Captain America and I am sure Joe accepted the request since he knew it was for JB and he was aware of how much JB admires his work.
I'll close by thanking JB for allowing me to work with him all of these years and a big thanks to Joe Kubert for drawing something for JB that will have a special place in his heart! Here's a snapshot I took of JB standing alongside the illo:

What a great story all around. Someone could make a movie out of this!
Great job, Jim. And thanks for posting the picture! I was going ask how JB planned to display it.

Awesome work Jim. You really are the best around.
Great pick of JB with his newest. I wonder if I changed my name to John Byrne if I could get one as well? =P
Another big congratulations to JB. I was literally calling people I knew just to come check that Kubert piece out. I am still truly stunned.

Congrats, JB! I know if I had something like that on my wall, I might very well waste away looking at it all the time instead of eating and sleeping! (And if I had that and a John Byrne Captain America...I'd be dead in a week.)

After a thought and gift like that a simple good birthday wish pales into nothingness ... happy birthday just the same.

The absolute best kind of gift -- one that touches on an unfulfilled wish of the recipient. Doesn't get any better than that. The story made me a little misty-eyed.

Congrats to JB on the piece and Jim for obtaining it.I'm most struck by the weight and sense of realism to the piece. It also feels like an homage to the WW2 era. I can't help but wonder if this were the concept art for the forthcoming film the makers would have not been so dismissive of the classic look. The drawing suggests a certain reverence to the history I find lacking these days.
