Brian: No X-Men were on the AF 1 cover. Why WOULD Logan have been included?

My copy has 2 members of the team on it.

Yup!

One of us feels it's odd that the Canadian X-Man wasn't drawn on the cover.

And btw, I can't reveal which side I am on according to the "rules". Any comments I make should not be seen as my views on the subject. I can tell you what I thought after JB clears this debate up (and I'm not sure he'll want to get involved!)

In the drawing below, Wolverine is mostly cut out of frame. One of us believes this may be a reflection of how you felt about the character at the time. The same person also believes you placed him there so Logan "could not see what is going on" -- "he's too short to see over Cyclops"...

••

As a wise man once said, "Please don't read between the lines, I don't write there." Or draw there.

Or does this "person" to whom you refer imagine I also have such "feelings" towards Banshee, the Scarlet Witch, and the Vision?

As another wise man once said, "Yeesh!"

The ability JB has to always draw the characters acting their part may
be his greatest strength. I stopped for a moment and thought how
outlandish Hawkeye's mask really looks...then looked at his
expression and noticed his total ease and conviction in his garb and
role.

First time I noticed the Silver Surfer lost in his own thoughts in this
group shot! Brilliant!

Nathan: We have an office in the new joint that will be devoted to my
favorite artist. Wall-to-wall Byrne! I promise, I WILL post pics when it's done
:)

**

Sounds incredible, Nathan. I, for one, am looking forward to the many
afternoons we will spend there talking about old times! Yeah-- I wish.

Kind of like my Kirby Korner -- but with a much less significant artist!

I WIN!!

Thanks for the answer, JB. I keep saying the same thing!!! My buddy, Jason (the fool), has also pointed out that Kitty faces the viewer because "you still liked that character by the end of your X-Men run".

He's nuts.

My buddy owes me 20 bucks! Thanks again, JB. I'll send you your cut.

As you probably know, the reverse is true. Chris had so mishandled scripting Kitty -- who was, after all, my character -- that by the time I left X-MEN I wanted nothing further to do with her.* I'd settled down a bit by the time I drew this group shot, but there is really no significance at all to Kitty looking at the viewer -- except to be "cute".

–––––

* Some of you may recall that I was originally asked to work on the X-MEN/ALPHA FLIGHT book, and I said I would on two conditions: neither Chris nor I would have anything to do with the plotting, and Kitty would not be in the book. Both were agreed to by Shooter.

When I received the plot, it was OBVIOUSLY written by Claremont, and Kitty was all over it. When I complained, I was told I was being "unprofessional" and the editor actually HUNG UP ON ME!!

Ah, those happy, halcyon days at Marvel!

I was recently reading a then newly-restarted Bullpen Bulletin from just after you'd left X-MEN, JB, wherein Jim Shooter explained that you had left the comicbook because you'd grown tired of working on mutants. So, all these unofficial peeks behind the curtain are fascinating!
