Seems like a hard book to color for a little kid!

JB: Unfortunately, the whole thing was forgotten as soon as I left the book, and Chris reverted to the "bouncy blue elf" portrayal of our Mr. Wagner.

---

Yeah, I really feel like the book fell apart after you split, JB. The Smith and JRJR issues are very wordy. The pace is sluggish -- the plots don't always wrap up neatly. The characters feel a bit mushy.

I know the sales went up -- but I feel like the quality went down--

"Samurai Wolverine?

Professor X out of the wheelchair?

Madelyne Pryor is Phoenix...Rachel Summers is Phoenix...

X-Babies???

Bleh.

Left to his own devices, Chris does tend to favor longer story arcs than me. Often without clearcut resolutions. One of my complaints while working on UNCANNY was that the X-Men rarely seemed to WIN. No matter what I drew, Chris would very often find a way to undercut it.

But, as I have so often said, sales continued to rise, after I left, and positively skyrocketed when Smitty arrived.

(Paul's arrival on the book was one of the oddest phenomenons I have yet witnessed in comics. X-MEN was getting something of a rep as a star-maker title, but Smith's star went supernova from the moment it was announced he would be the new artist. Vitually sight unseen. Amazing!)

I remember being excited about Smith based on an X-Men story he did with
Terry Austin in Marvel Fanfare-- for the sole reason that his work (with
Austin inks) reminded me of John Byrne. I grew to like Smith's style, but all I
wanted at first was for him to be a "poor man's Byrne".

I came on in the middle of it.

I wonder what the big deal from Cockrum to Smith was that made sales go up so much. Myself, I've never been a Cockrum fan, but this was before I knew anything about "pencillers" and the like. Was his style that much different than Dave's that it was more universally liked? Was a case of Dave being on the title for a couple of years and fans being "burned out" on his style?

Nathan, is this piece up in your new house yet? Have you posted a pic of the
framed finished piece? Do people's eyes pop out of their heads when they
see it?

••

For reasons that defy understanding, there was a lot of resistance to Dave's art in the more speculation inclined buyers (can't really bring myself to call them "fans"). I suspect the arrival of Paul Smith was merely the point at which the speculators decided to pounce.

My X-Commission isn't up in the new house yet -- but don't think I'm crazy -- NOTHING is up in the new house yet!

I have a few more things on the list to get framed -- and then I'll call the handy man to hang everything.

Yes, I need to call a handy man. Me + hammer = many-holes-in-the-wall-and-frustration.

We have an office in the new joint that will be devoted to my favorite artist. Wall-to-wall Byrne! I promise, I WILL post pics when it's done :)

Ok, small debate with a friend of mine... and I'm sick of having it... JB, please help! (thanks in advance)

In the drawing below, Wolverine is mostly cut out of frame. One of us believes this may be a reflection of how you felt about the character at the time. The same person also believes you placed him there so Logan "could not see what is going on" -- "he's too short to see over Cyclops"...

...the person that thinks the above would also like to point out you left Logan off the AF #1 cover... he feels this may be a reflection of how you felt about the character at the time...

The 2nd person in this debate believes these are examples of "reading your own story into a piece of art".

JB?

No X-Men were on the AF 1 cover. Why WOULD Logan have been included?
