Of greater significance than Wolverine's drinking habits, in that panel, are Nightcrawler's thoughts. When Roger Stern was editor, he used to grumble that the X-Men had become too "clubbish", with all the mutants getting along so well with each other that the whole idea of mutants being "feared and hated by the world they are sworn to protect" was largely lost. We only ever really saw mutants hanging out with other mutants, so there was no tension. As part of having Kitty brought into the group, I wanted to use her to remind readers that Kurt was a MONSTER, and "normal" humans could not be expected to be comfortable around him. This was to play out in some very poignant ways, especially after the visit from Kitty of the Future, who had gotten over her reservations long ago. Unfortunately, the whole thing was forgotten as soon as I left the book, and Chris reverted to the "bouncy blue elf" portrayal of our Mr. Wagner.
