His face looks very angular. Did he draw the jaw-line the same without the mask?

••

You'll note that Smitty there makes a common mistake when drawing Wolverine's mask -- he forgets about those distinctive muttonchop sideburns!

How do the sideburns affect how you draw his mask, JB? Thicker jawline?

Not sure what you mean by "thicker jawline", but the open portion of the mask can be no wider than the part of Logan's face not covered by the sideburns. Notice that Smitty's version opens the mask the full width of the lower half of Wolverine's face, which means the sideburns would be uncovered.

Ah. Those spaces right at the jaw were always colored. He almost always drew the lower part of the mask as open for coloring coming down from the cheekbone as he did in this case. Why? Who knows. Probably one of those "interpretation" things we were discussing a page back.

Yeah, I was going to say Smith may have left the cheek covering portion of the mask open for color [actually, I am saying that, but my post used to say that differently before Brian's post made mine redundant]. This is how his Wolverine arrived in my mailbox as an X-Men subscriber:

That looks more like the colorist trying to "fix" it. After all, when has that part of the mask EVER been the same color as the rest of the costume? (And I ask as the one who DESIGNED that particular version of the costume.)

Another instance, perhaps, of what Cockrum noted -- PMS showing Dave and me that we were doing it wrong? :-P

That's exactly what I was wondering, JB.

JB,

Have you taken a look at the X-MEN/ALPHA FLIGHT miniseries?

Did you get the same feeling regarding Paul Smith's portrayal of the
Alphans?
