Brian: Smith has his own unique style. I never had any problem identifying any of the characters as drawn by him..

---

As you said above, you joined the party late. There's no way you could have "had any problem identifying any of the characters" drawn by Smith. I'm not saying that off-model thing is a total deal breaker... but there's times being off model hurts your storytelling.

And once again I'll point out: I really find Paul Smith's style of drawing appealing!

I already knew who Cyclops, Colossus, and Nightcrawler were. Probably thru my older cousins. So, while I wasn't a regular reader of the book, I DID know at least some of the characters. ( I honestly don't remember if I had the SPECIAL EDITION reprint at that time or not. I don't even know how I got that particular book...)

The reprint of GSXM 1. It was out in '82, I think. It also had a backup by Claremont/ Cockrum featuring Kitty having her 14th birthday.

On the subject of X-Artists... I remember loving JRJR's work on the title.

I have tried to go back and read those issues again. The stories just don't seem to hold my interest at all.

I loved the fact that JR drew the same characters Dave and I had drawn, but in his own style, rather than drawing his own VERSIONS of the characters, as Smitty did.

It was as if Dave, JR and I had looked at the same live models, while Paul went out and hired new ones.

Marvel Universe cover, maybe? HEROES FOR HOPE, I think had Storm in a panel or 2. SECRET WARS 2, number 1's cover, perhaps.

Yup, I noticed that after I posted. And I think you're also correct about the secret wars 2 cover.
