That Stan could remember, in 2006, something he "planned" in the early 1960s -- well, that may be some of the most Amazing Fantasy he's ever come up with!

(No disrespect intended. Stan has a notoriously bad memory, and the fact that he does is a card he has often played himself!)

Another piece like this is now officially in the pipeline -- not sure how soon I will get to it -- and I was looking at this one again this morning to get my brain working along these lines again.

One of the things I noticed was the low number of characters with capes. It has often been said that this was something that distinguished early Marvel from DC. While so many of the DC characters had capes, very few did at Marvel, at least at the beginning.

In fact, I realized that of the 10 characters with capes who appear in this piece, half are in costumes / designed! (Zaladane, the one character determined to be missing, wore a cape, and was not my design. And, of course, Phoenix as the Black Queen wore a cape, but Nathan didn't ask for her to be included.)

(Wasn't sure whether to include Lorna/Polaris in this count. Is that a cape she wears?)

So much for the lightning fast reflexes, Danny!

Lei Kung would be MOST displeased!

This thread is awesome. I like all the supplemental info that's coming along with the commission.

From the X-Men Companion II (Fantagraphics Books, Inc. 1982)...

Interesting to read about JB's early thoughts on an Alpha Flight series...!

---------------

SANDERSON: Now, you're planning to bring Alpha Flight back in the FF?

BYRNE: I hope to eventually, yes.

SANDERSON: And you'd like to do a mini-series with them sometime, you said?

BYRNE: A mini-series at least.

SANDERSON: Maybe even a full series? Make it a book?

BYRNE: Well, if there's a market for it, I'd love to do a regular series.

Welllll. . . .   consider the date. I gave that interview in 1982, and the first issue of ALPHA FLIGHT came out in 1983. The book was already in the pipeline, I was just not then in a position to announce it yet.

(sigh Remember when it was possible to keep secrets in this Biz?)
