I found a pic of the original art from page 17 -- notice the note at the bottom for Dave Cockrum -- "Fix Wolvie's Costume"

The "fix" in that case was ADDING the costume! Dave had redesigned the suit (the famous "Here's the new costume -- it's a bear to draw!" moment, as he showed me the design in his sketchbook months earlier) but no one had bothered to make sure I got a copy sent to me in time to draw this issue. So I drew Logan "naked" and Dave added the details. This was ultimately unnecessary, as the Fang costume lasted all of one panel once I took over drawing the X-Book.

For some reason, Dave also "fixed" Wolverine's face on those pages. Again, odd, since this was my "audition".

It seems the practice of putting characters on model is no longer part of the process. What's your opinion on that, JB? Did it bother you to see your characters faces "fixed" when you saw the published IF art?

I thought it was pretty silly to "fix" my drawings of the X-Men in that issue. First, as noted, this was sort of my "audition" (altho the decision had pretty much been made already that I would be following Dave on UNCANNY), so how I drew them was what they were going to look like. Second, the only real differences were purely STYLISTIC. I didn't draw like Dave, so the faces looked as if I had drawn them, not as if he had drawn them.

There may have been something more than a need to keep the characters "on model", sadly. As I have only recently discovered, Dave's departure from the book was not nearly so voluntary as I was led to believe at the time. Based on the way our relationship changed -- much for the worse -- over the following years, I now think Dave resented my inheritance of what he thought of as strictly HIS book, and the redrawing in this issue of IRON FIST was informed by that resentment.

Would Dave had not been assigned to do the redraws, tho?

••

Why not? I've drawn plenty of "What if...?" scenes and stories.
