I am reading Showcase Presents: Superman vol 3 or 4, and I just marvel at how well Curt Swan is able to draw faces. At one point I found myself wondering how he can take all those little marks and make a face out of them. I also read the story where one of Superman's robots "Ajax" becomes Wonder Man and then dies. A year later Marvel introduced Wonder Man, who also died. I wonder if Heck and Lee saw the Superman story? Probably not, but that's quite a coincidence.

Yeah, I'd tend to think that if Stan knew DC had already used the name Wonder Man, he wouldn't have used it for his character. Why ask for trouble? You're right that it's almost certainly just a coincidence.

Oops? Think that DC might've missed an opportunity to get a lawsuit against Marvel back then? Or does the name copyright only apply to primary characters who have their own name and likenesses up in print?

There was a funny story circulating around the time I got into the Biz.As it was told, Marvel did Wonder Man, and DC immediately sent out a Cease & Desist, so the character was killed off. Then, a few years later, Marvel did Power Man, and not long after that DC did Power Girl. And Wonder Man immediately reappeared! Given the old publishing schedules, I've never quite been able to build a workable timeline out of this, but it's still amusing.

Look closer at Michael's promotional piece and imagine Colleen Wing and Misty Knight as "Knight & Wing". It works for me!

DC Comics used the Powerman name before Marvel as well in this 1958 issue of World's Finest.

Of course there's also this guy, drawn by no less than Will Eisner for Victor Fox, back in the 40's. DC sued the character out of existence. Sort of a dry run for their later case against Captain Marvel, I suppose.

Funny how both DC's Powerman & Wonderman characters turned out to be robots.

Anybody remember when Mighty M****l sued poor Dave Stevens over the Rocketeer because they'd had a thoroughly forgettable gang of criminals called the Rocketeers (whom I don't believe we've seen since) in one issue of Daredevil several years prior to Cliff Seacord's debut? Talk about f*ckin' bullies...
