Well, hang on, Al - now as a student of Malcolm X, I get the reason why "black" isn't the best word, the negative connections, etc, and the hyphenated-American status is reserved for they alone, but speaking practically, I've found "black" to be a commonly accepted term amongst my fellow brothers from the African continent.

Out of respect, I go with what's appropriate and accepted, and while I totally agree with Malcolm X's thoughts on the subject, if "black" is still an ok term, I'm ok with it.

Now - if it's not, I'm all ears. But as far as I knew, it's still an acceptable term. No?

Black, yes.  Black people, sure.  Black folks? Why not.

But 'Blacks'?  Always rubs me the wrong way.

Hm. Interesting. I can see where you're coming from and will consider that in the future.

And thus do we continue to give power to words, and thru them to those who wish to hurt us.

I think, like any religious organization, that there is the best of intentions in theory, and just disasterous corruption and failure at every level of reality.

As a social organization, too.

I like that there was something organized there to bring people together and give them a structure that might have been lacking in schools or due to economically devistated communities, but in reality, there's all sorts of ugly power plays and petty dictatorships and as an experiment, I call it a failure.

Now, the Prince Hall Masons, on the other hand, is like NOI done right. But that's just my opinion.

It's the "s".  Denotes a grouping, a lumping, a dismissal as a whole, as it were.

At least that's the way I see it.  Cooks are like that.

I don't think it has to be dismissive.  I call blacks blacks without meaning anything negative.  I also call whites whites, and I'm a whites myself.
