JB is to Superman that Neal Adams is to Batman. •• That's WAY too generous! **** No it's not. To many of us, especially those of us who were at the "right" age when you began working on Superman, your version is the definitive Superman. It gave us the chance to get in at the beginning of a new version of the life of the greatest of all superheroes, and an excellent version at that. When I think of Superman, and I'm sure this is true of many people, that's the one I see in my mind, the one you drew. Of all your work, and I've enjoyed almost all of iut that I've read over the years, Superman is the one that had the biggest impact on me. In fcat, if someone came to me and asked for something that would show them what the appeal of superheroes is, I'd give them Man of Steel #1 without hesitation and wait until they inevitably asked for the next issue. It was just that good. And then you managed to follow that perfect mini-series, which incidentally also provided a perfect "first look" at Batman, with the regular Superman series, the first issue of which featured what I literally think might be the finest cover to grace a superhero comic in my lifetime. That is a perfect cover, a perfect example of everything a cover should accomplish. I don't think Steve was being too generous.
