I was as disappointed as anybody with the gas cloud with Galactus' shadow on it, but in many ways I suspect we should be grateful for small mercies. A CGI Galactus stomping around Manhattan -- or Tokyo, or wherever that was -- would have stood a very good chance of just looking silly. It would have taken a very deft hand to do him justice. iii
I've loved many a comic tale that featured giant beings but have yet to be awed when giant sized creatures pop up in superhero films (Loki's serpent, Giant Sandman).
I can't put my finger on why its distracting or an odd fit....might be the same reason why its cooler to see Superman pull a door off a car than it is to see him lift a continental shelf.

If Galactus was played as a giant cardboard cutout "stomping around", sure, he'd look silly. But what if some thought was put into it? What if, because of his immense size, he moves somewhat in slow motion, with perhaps a slight "ghost image" following him? (And I don't recall Galactus being particularly inclined to "stomp" anyway!)

Um, JB, You do realize you just argued a point with yourself, right? Are you feeling OK? Do you need to take a lie-down?

Patrick, JB did not post [A CGI Galactus stomping around Manhattan -- or Tokyo, or wherever that was -- would have stood a very good chance of just looking silly. It would have taken a very deft hand to do him justice.] He quoted it from what David posted on the previous page to make his point.

I think you might want to look further up that page. About halfway down the page JB appears to be the one that posted that first. David is quoting JB. If JB is quoting David, he is actually(!!!) quoting, and by extension, arguing with himself.

Patrick is correct, William.
Byrne made the original post (on Oct 5, 2012)...

And then David Plunkert responded to Byrne's post (on Dec 21, 2012)

And then Byrne argued with his own post (on Dec 21, 2012)...

Well, that's two very different contexts.
I just wish Marvel would reprint the 2nd FF omnibus, with the 1st Galactus story. It went OOP almost immediately and it's been selling at high secondary market prices for years.

I thought the first Byrne had a point -- if not done right, a giant humanoid Galactus could have looked silly. But I don't think the Cloud Galactus was done out of contempt for comics.
So ultimately, I tend to agree more with second Byrne -- it if was done right, with some "ghostly" energy around the giant form, it could have been really cool. But I don't think the Transformers is a good counter example, because in hindsight they look kind of silly. So point for First Byrne on that one.

If Galactus could be done with the same measure of SHEER AWESOME that this trailer contains from 1:04 - 1:10 then I'd be a happy fan!

I have contended with several people I've discussed this matter with that Galactus could be pulled off on the big screen as much as any character, provided you had a talented team of people working on the film. I had debates with the same people who scoffed at the idea of Galactus on the big screen who later praised "Watchmen," which features a naked giant blue man. If audiences can accept one, why not the other?
