Man, that Bucky sure did get captured and tied up...a lot.

Of those 'prototype' characters the only ones I consider to be true prototypes are the previously mentioned mutant in AF#14, the Alien Sandman from JIM#70 and Fin Fang Foom from ST#89 (which probably should be lumped in with TTA#27 since both FFF and Ant Man completely transitioned to the MU with little changes.)

One of the more hilarious 'prototypes' labeled as such by the Overpriced Street Guide was Strange Tales#97, which featured 'Aunt May' and 'Uncle Ben' who had a mermaid for a daughter.  I think Kurt Busiek mentioned that he was going to throw an oblique reference to this story in UTOS but later removed it.

Anyone looking for Timely Cap goodness should seek out Captain America: The Classic years, a pair of Masterworks-like hardcovers in a slipcase.  Reprints Cap 1-10.

Rob, I have that slipcase collection and it's cool. Marvel has reprinted those first ten "Captain America" comics in later years in softcover, too. But, as far as I can tell, Marvel hasn't reprinted any more of the series over the years, except for the brief 1950's revival issues.

What Matt said, but with the additional info that it was a 'try out' to see if putting Cap in a comic would sell.  At the end of the story the readers are even asked to write in to Marvel and tell them if they want Cap in a book.

Avengers #4 came about 6 months after this book, if I'm not mistaken.  There's a bit of  story weirdness in Strange Tales #114, with the Torch reading a GA Cap comic and finding out that Cap was Steve Rogers (!!).  Part of the fun I suppose.

It must have been weird for Kirby to draw a character he created, knowing that it really wasn't the REAL cap.  Then the colorist made the odd decision to make Cap/Acrobats trunks PURPLE.  Not sure why that happened (and yes, it's not just the cover but the whole book).

ISTR a similar change in Cap's costume used as a plot point based around the 1950's 'Commie Smasher' Cap having a costume different from the GA Cap, whose flag emblem stretched all the way around his waist.

The 1950's replacement Captain America & Bucky vs. the original Captain America and the Falcon. (Note that the 50's Bucky went on to become the second Nomad).

Sadly, the 1950s Cap was brought back again a while back and is the villain in the current storyline going on in Captain America. (And yes, he has no stripes on the back of his shirt) They also revealed his real name during the storyline, which I thought was a bad idea.

I would have preferred a link rather than waiting for 2 pages of covers to load.

I'm not a huge fan of that Timely / Atlas superhero era. But I absolutely respect the fact that were it not for those comics, the Marvel Age wouldn't have happened.

(I was going to say "we wouldn't have today's Marvel", but remembered how little that actually means.)

I just wish more of those GA heroes were around. But some of the best have either been killed off or screwed around with:

1. The Destroyer is old and has been retconned to be gay.

2. The original Human Torch has been killed off at least once JB brought him back - not including his death being faked when he lost his powers. And he's been used more as a plot device or prop than as a hero since JB stopped writing him.

3. Golden Age Angel was behind the whole Scourge of the Underworld thing!

4. Golden Age Vision is the guardian of a Cosmic Cube.

5. Toro has been resurrected, but retconned to have a connection to Professor Horton, who created the original Human Torch.

6. Whizzer and Miss America = dead. (Though I love the comment about the Whizzer that Fred Hembeck used in that Fantastic Four Roast comic taking a shot at him for calling himself `The Whizzer' and wearing yellow.....)
