As a boy I always wanted one of these so-called "Hover-Chairs".

I think they built one of those on Mythbusters, and it worked!

First of all, gotta love the O.J. Simpson one on page one.

Second, what the hell is up with Mick Jagger's hair on the Rolling Stones' ad? They apparently thought he was blond.

Anyhoo, the one below is my all-time favorite (indeed, my only favorite). My friend and I have used the phrase "Those vinyl balls are just too slick" countless times in the 2.5 decades since we encountered this ad, and we still use it now (sort of an "in joke"). Even when my friend had a testicle removed a while ago, the first thing he said to me was "My vinyl ball is just too slick."

An interesting trip down memory lane. One of the weirder pieces in my original art collection is the original art to a Curt Swan/Vinnie Colletta Wonder Woman page for Twinkies.

Also, I wonder how many of you are aware that / did one of those Twinkie ads, featuring the Hulk. It was even scripted, as a rewrite, by Roger Stern, who could not stand the fact that the ad writer had written the Hulk's dialog as if he was Superbaby. ("Me am Hulk!")

I think those D&D ads by Willingham is what first got me interested in the game. Which is kind of important to me, because roleplaying games turned out almost to be a lifestyle.

Most of those ads are familiar to those of us in the UK of course, where they offered a tantalising glimpse of what life must be like fof kids in the US. Did anyone here sell enough seeds, cards or copies of GRIT to earn any of those fabulous prizes?!

Here in the UK, for several years starting in 1969, an advertising strip for Clarks' Commandos shoes would appear in boys' comics for a number of short runs, usually 8 -10 weeks. The strip would appear in several titles at the same time and were drawn by Fleetway/IPC stalwart Tom Kerr. They were often of better quality than some of the regular strips in the comics they appeared in. I used to look forward to a new story appearing but I don't think I ever owned a pair of Commando shoes!

You read more of Kit and the boys' exploits at Steve Holland's Bear Alley blog:

For more ads form UK comics visit Lew Stringer's excellent Blimey! It's another blog about comics!:
