Oops!  Damn lack of quote function!  I was aiming my reply at James.

James,

So, William, Mike and myself have shared what we're doing in the community -- not for self-glorification but because you asked. Care to share with us?

If I had the kind of access to politicians that the lobbyists and corporations do, I make be able to make a change.

No offiense Lee, and I get your point about the power of special interest lobbies, but...

Nothing you can do locally to make a difference?

No i'm sure there are some things, however I doubt I will be able to affect the economic and politcal policies of this country too much.

Well.   Yeah.   Nothing's going to change the way of the world, Lee.

The rich will always screw the poor - that's the way of the world, bud.   But what can you do to make things better at your level?

Like - there's no cure for cancer, bur what can you do to make the cancer patient's life tolerable?

I do what I can to make the world a little better and volunteer at times... but when greedy, lazy, educated politicians piss away any progress groups like us have made, they should be held accountable.

For example, slash millions from desperately-needed public programs in Minnesota because you want to "tighten the belt" and make a few political points? Then you'd be the perpetually-absent governor Tim Pawlenty.

Wait, tell us to do more with less... that's as ridiculous as "just say no."

So if the "rich will always screw the rest of us," does that mean the best anyone else can hope for is to effect triage on our sad, unimportant, pathetic lives until we quietly shuffle to the grave?

Sounds like someone's got a case of the Mondays!

"Surely you're not saying we have the resources to save the poor from their lot?
There will be poor always, pathetically struggling -Look at the good things you've got! "

Something like that? (smiley face)

Ha!  Well, speaking as a Geldof fan - I ALWAYS have a case of the Mondays, Monte - but yes, yes, I do have a fatalist attitude.

Not a believer in Chaos Theory and the Butterfly Effect, Lee?

Maybe I'm a cockeyed optimist, but I believe real change happens one person at a time. If one percent of this country volunteered an average of one hour a week of community service, that would be 156 million hours of donated labour generated in the course of a year. What's the economic value of that?

Think about the playgrounds that could be built, the creek beds that could be cleaned up, the affordable housing that could be constructed, the blind that could have someone read to them, the elderly shut-ins who would enjoy some human contact, the children who could be mentored, the rescue missions that could be helped, the non-profit organizations that could benefit. And that's only one percent of the population. Imagine if we could get two percent of the population invested like that. Or ten percent.

There is no end of worthy causes that are in need of a helping hand and no end of opportunities to use your skills to contribute back to society. And together, collectively, with but a small investment of our time, we can affect the kinds of changes and improvements in this country that Washington politicians can only dream about.
