JB,

Another fantastic commission (of course).

How did you do the shading of the red?  Is it just layers of different colours?

The red is just a thick permanent marker. I penciled the piece, then laid in the color, then inked.

By inking after the color was laid down, I was able to incorporate some of the "streakiness" of the marker into the line forms of the inks.

And to John, I've read that Jack wasn't treated so well upon his return to Marvel? That he was considered a "dinosaur" by some there at the time, and that Devil Dinosaur could be considered a "response" to those claims?Ê But more than that, could you please elaborate on what it was like to actually ink Kirby and what was it like to erase the King's pencils?Ê Thanks!

Kirby wasn't treated well? Well, I guess that depends on how you define it. Despite retailer protests that "Kirby doesn't sell!" he was given work, and, with books like DEVIL DINOSAUR and MACHINE MAN the Powers that Were at Marvel tried desperately to find something for him to do that would not be rejected utterly by the shops and the fans -- as they had rejected his return to CAPTAIN AMERICA.

That's sad. Jack Kirby was an incredible artist and visual storyteller. While I wasn't a fan of his own plotted stories, or his dialogue. I've always thought he had a rich imagination, which helped in creating and co-creating so many great characters.

Alas, as noted elsewhere, the all-too-common attitude, then as now, among many fans and retailers was "What have you done for me lately?"

Awesome! It may not be viewed as his seminal work, but I had a lot of fun with the Devil Dinosaur Omnibus Marvel released. It's a primate riding a red dinosaur - made me feel like a kid again when I used to play with my toys.

Great job, JB! It's you, but it's still Kirby too.

I think the thread title should have been "what's black and white and red all over?"
