So, having seen the original art, we now know the story when something like this:
JB: "What does that shirt say? "Byrne Victo...?" What does that mean?"
MO: "Byrne Victo... Um... Victo...Um... Byrne Victim! Yeah, that's it!"
JB: "'Byrne Victim', eh? That's rather clever..."

Sorry, Matt, but that is not, in fact, the "origin" of the term. You may, indeed, have thought of it independently, and you may even have used it, in speaking to me at that con, but where / got it was from an artist who showed me his work, and in one panel had a character wearing a T-shirt upon which was emblazoned "BYRNE VICTIM". "That's great!" said I. "Mind if I steal it?" "Go ahead!" was the enthusiastic reply. **************************************************** When there's any question about it, not that there should be, the man it's named after gets the benefit of the doubt. Matt,, good little story you have there, but what JB related is something I have heard many times over the years. And NOT just from him.

Again, I would have no idea that others would have laid claim to a similar story. There didn't seem to be any other mention of it anywhere else on the net than the original post that I sighted. I'm sure they will come out of the woodwork now, right? John can either match up the details or he can't. I was initially off in a few things... it's been a long time since that encounter and what does it really matter, any ways? If John wanted to ask me about particular details, I'd no problem addressing them. I was fully aware that the shirt in this particular panel had a misspelling, and could have easily photoshopped it to read more accurately and more clearly, but didn't. This said, I feel that my integrity is fully intact and I will loose no sleep over this.
It's just a story I thought some would find interesting to know about.

I believe Matt. I think both his and JB's recollection of events are clouded by time, which is normal. Thanks, Matt, for giving us all something to smile over for the past many, many years.

Thanks for the benefit of the doubt, Ian. :) You're right, and I am actually a bit surprised at how much detail I may have forgotten about that day. I've never relayed that story to anyone before, so the memory of it has never been exercised. Looking at those particular art pages, after all these years, and I see all kinds of lil' jokes in them like the "BYRNE VICTIM" t-shirt. I think that John's name shows up in quite few places, along with other names of importance at the time in my young life. In fact, "BYRNE VICTIM" also shows up as the rearranged keys on a keyboard. Maybe I'll post that panel, as well.
Thanks for the kudos on the art! That was a loooong time ago. Oddly enough, it doesn't look as bad as I remember it being... still, I would never show it off in a portfolio. My style has completely changed and I am no longer a "Byrned Clone."
Best,
Matt

Well Matt, based on your latest posts in the sketch thread I'd say your style has changed a lot. But what's clear to me is that you always had talent.

I think it does say "Byrne Victim" in that panel, actually. It's just that the I and M are smaller than the other letters and cramped together to fit in the given space.

Well, I'll be the first to admit that the word victim is actually misspelled as "victom" in that image that I posted. I sure that I have pencil scans somewhere, which I likely what JB saw. I'll see if I can find 'em.
Thanks again for the compliments (not on my speeling, of course.)
:)
