Please note that all Forum members named Osborne are required to commission at least one full-length comic from JB.

Sorry, Matt, but that is not, in fact, the "origin" of the term. You may, indeed, have thought of it independently, and you may even have used it, in speaking to me at that con, but where / got it was from an artist who showed me his work, and in one panel had a character wearing a T-shirt upon which was emblazoned "BYRNE VICTIM".

"That's great!" said I. "Mind if I steal it?"

"Go ahead!" was the enthusiastic reply.

Well, kind of sorta, John. There is a bit of slight of hand going on here. Not sure how important all the details are. The artist that you refer to was wearing, in fact, a shirt with an air brushed version of the cover of NEXTMEN #1 on it. It was spot on, and you sort of discerningly asked him where he got it, and he said that he made it himself. He did show you his portfolio... upon which you said to him, before looking at it, "If you're any good I'll have to kill you." As that artist and myself were together , shopping our work about at the Con, it could be easy to lump us together, or not. There may have been a character in one our pages wearing a similar shirt reading such a thing, as t-shirts are always a fun place to hide "in-jokes."

Though all the details are a bit fuzzy after all these years, and now that you mention it, I do recall you asking if you could use the term/steal the saying? Don't know why you'd ask, but sure, why not?

Not looking to stamp my name into anything here, or get it on a coffee mug, but I was THE guy who said this to you and just sharing the story. Not sure why I looked, but I typed the term into Google and the original posing came up asking where  the term came from?

Just sharing a story... thanks for chiming in.

Matt

Again, no, sorry, but what the artist I am referring to showed me was comic pages he had drawn, and on one of those pages was a guy in a BYRNE VICTIM t-shirt.

Well, with all respect, yes, the artist in question was wearing the described t-shirt. Now that it has been mentioned, yes there was a panel in one of our comics pages with a character wearing the shirt.

I seriously have not thought much about this since then, though I do recall it being mentioned in your YFATH column and the thinking "Oh, he really is going to use that."

Not sure why the details are so important, or why someone would claim to be the one behind such a term when they clearly wouldn't be, but that is not the case here. As I had originally mentioned in my previous post, I don't parade about on these forums, so maybe there is a propensity for folks to boast about or make claims that aren't true. I'd imagine it possible. Perhaps that makes me somewhat naive, but since I don't surround myself in these types of environments, then this would be a behavior that I am not familiar with.

Again, thanks for chiming in.

Matt

Did anyone hear the Mayan calendar ends in less than two years?

Oh and I termed the phrase, "tater".

Yah. Interesting story - it was, in fact, me who discovered that and made it known to the world.

I’ve legally changed my name to Byrne Vic Tim O’Neill.  But I don’t want you guys to be formal or anything with me now that I have the name change – you guys just use the name I was using before and continue to call me “Mr. O’Neill”.

I wasn't planning on revealing this, but since this is apparently a thread of confessions...

In fact, I'm the artist known as Bjorn Heyn.

Boy, casual ribbing aside, you guys certainly are being a bit rude. I did not claim to have created the Avengers or anything. I mentioned that I had coined a "term." Big deal. Maybe it was my mistake to think that most folks on this board were older than 5 yrs old.

Moving on....
